Position Overview

The DOT Safety Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing the company's safety programs to ensure compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and other applicable federal, state, and local laws. This role involves overseeing driver safety, conducting safety audits, and implementing policies to minimize risk and enhance the overall safety of transportation operations. Key Responsibilities

  1. Safety Program Development and Implementation
  • Develop and implement comprehensive safety programs and policies in compliance with DOT regulations.
  • Continuously review and update safety programs to reflect changes in regulations and industry best practices.
  • Ensure all safety policies and procedures are communicated effectively to all employees.
  1. Compliance Management
  • Monitor compliance with DOT regulations, including Hours of Service (HOS), drug and alcohol testing, and vehicle maintenance.
  • Conduct regular audits and inspections to ensure adherence to safety standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of safety compliance and incident reports.
  1. Driver Training and Education
  • Develop and deliver safety training programs for drivers and other transportation personnel.
  • Conduct orientation sessions for new drivers, emphasizing safety procedures and regulatory compliance.
  • Provide ongoing education and training to address emerging safety issues and improve driving practices.
  1. Incident Investigation and Reporting
  • Investigate accidents, incidents, and near-misses to determine root causes and develop preventive measures.
  • Prepare detailed incident reports and maintain comprehensive records of all investigations.
  • Collaborate with insurance companies and regulatory agencies as needed during investigations.
  1. Risk Management
  • Identify potential safety hazards and implement measures to mitigate risks.
  • Develop and enforce safety protocols for loading and unloading, vehicle operation, and cargo handling.
  • Implement and monitor safety performance metrics to identify trends and areas for improvement.
  1. Communication and Coordination
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all safety-related matters within the organization.
  • Communicate safety policies, updates, and incident findings to management and staff.
  • Coordinate with other departments to ensure alignment and support for safety initiatives.
  1. Emergency Response
  • Develop and maintain emergency response plans and procedures.
  • Conduct regular emergency drills and training sessions for drivers and staff.
  • Ensure readiness and effective response in the event of an emergency or incident.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Transportation Management, or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience: Previous experience in safety management within the transportation or logistics industry is highly desirable.
  • Certifications: Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Director of Safety (CDS), or similar certifications are advantageous.
  • Skills:
  • Strong knowledge of DOT regulations and safety standards.
  • Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities.
  • Proficiency with safety management software and other relevant technology.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Analytical skills to assess safety data and develop actionable insights.

Working Conditions
