Academy of Art University's School of Game Development is currently hiring Part-Time Instructors to teach a variety of Game Development classes including Game Programming and Game Scripting, for the Fall 2024 semester. As a Part-Time game instructor, you will:


  • Teach in your given specialty either on campus (180 New Montgomery, San Francisco) or the traditional online environment.
  • Clearly communicate existing course material each week while motivating and inspiring students to deliver their best work.
  • Grade student work and provide timely feedback on weekly assignments, midterms, finals, and long-term projects.
  • Provide mentoring opportunities through student advising during interactions with class instruction.
  • Support curriculum as needed by suggesting any edits to keep coursework up-to-date according to industry standards.


Requirements for All Specialities:

  • At least 3 years of professional game industry experience.
  • 1 or more shipped projects / development cycles.
  • Excellent verbal, written, problem solving, professional and interpersonal skills.


3D Art Skills: Onsite Open

  • Experience using Maya, ZBrush, Substance Painter and/or Designer, Photoshop, Unreal Engine and/or Unity to create props, environments, and/or characters.
  • Proficiency in the game asset pipeline (modeling/digital sculpting, retopology, UV mapping, map baking, PBR surface development, staging and lighting in a game engine)
  • A strong eye for form, silhouette, anatomy, composition, and color.


Concept Art Skills: Onsite Open

  • High level drawing and digital painting abilities
  • Adept in use of Photoshop for Concept Art
  • Portfolio work demoing thorough understand of Concept Art for Video Games
  • Proficient in 1 or more of the following areas: Character Design, Environment Design, Prop Design, Production Artwork, Figure Drawing and Character Painting


Game Programming Skills: Onsite, Virtual or Online Roles Open

  • At least 5 years of professional C/C++ programming experience.
  • Strong knowledge of game programming techniques.
  • Mastery of game architecture and common design patterns.
  • Expertise in common data structures and algorithms used in games.
  • Experience with low-level programming and optimization.


Game Design Skills: Onsite Open

  • Experience developing games in the latest versions of Unity and / or Unreal.
  • Experience with the fundamentals of practical game design: level design, systems design, and narrative.
  • Experience in scripting with both traditional and visual tool sets.
  • Experience with game development tools: Photoshop, Maya, Perforce, and Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent visual and written presentation skills.


Compensation: $70.00 to $100.00 per hour for teaching and $18.07 per hour for all other non-teaching work.
