Primarily responsible for engineering design, implementation, integration, and troubleshooting support for telecommunications and data network systems involving electric transmission, distribution, sub-transmission, metering and other grid technologies. Job duties will include evaluation of emerging technologies; participation in equipment specification and selection; and performing end-to-end solution design including validation and testing of advanced communications systems.
You will work closely with our Substation Engineering, Protection Engineering, Distribution Control & Instrumentation Engineering, Meter Engineering, and other departments to provide communications solutions for projects assigned to those groups. In addition, you will be responsible for the development of long-term strategies for telecom networks supporting substations, distribution system controls, meters and other fixed and mobile devices.
• Expertise in some or all of the following communications technologies:
o RF Data Communication Systems including point to point, point to multipoint and mesh topologies.
o Private and Public LTE networks
o Fiber Optic and Microwave Transport Systems
o Leased wired and wireless services
o Computer Network Routing/Switching, Cloud Services
o AMI Field Networks
Telecom/Network Engineer Must have engineering degree Deploying fiber networks, versed in IP networks, TDM Technologies, AMI Networks experience, Not your standard telecom background.
7+ years of experience

Engineering degree required
Technologies versed include fiber networks, microwave transport, Verizon and public telecoms, circuits and facilities in substations. IP networking. Newer technologies. Some older such as Sonet are still supported. AMI networks would be beneficial. Project Engineer. Support capital delivery process where they build and upgrade substations. Telecom infrastructure in place to support projects or expansion of substation. Private infra or working with Verizon/telecom. Upgrading Sonet to new IP based systems. Bonus: worked in utility field. Utility and telecom experience is a big plus. Understanding of telecom requirements. 7+ years of experience. The more the better. Hybrid role – 2 days in office. 25% of the time they will go to substations within the territory to do surveys and support work. Site visits to subs. Monitoring what is going on. Go out and assist on site for any issues.
Territory is all of upstate New York. Buffalo, Syracuse, etc.
Not as much software as hardware. Mostly hardware and physical install. Communications from the sub back to the control centers.
Security is handled by Cyber Security folks.
