Responsibilities



You will provide technical leadership and expertise to existing research efforts, and collaborate with stakeholders to define and shape future research programs. Working with colleagues across the Laboratory, and in collaboration with our research partners in industry, academia, and at other National Laboratories, you will lead efforts to build new, high-visibility research projects that leverage C&BP Group capabilities to meet the technology goals of the Department of Energy and other key stakeholders. You will also have significant responsibility for supporting the development and growth of the C&BP competency at PNNL, including working with PNNL leadership in generating ideas for new proposals and participating in business development activities, providing key input to senior management to develop strategies, and mentoring junior level staff in the Group.

We are seeking an experienced and innovative research to provide leadership in the field of hydrothermal liquefaction. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of the HTL process and its application in converting wet wastes, algae, and other low-cost feedstocks into biocrude. This role requires a combination of technical expertise, leadership skills, and a proven track record in proposal writing and laboratory management.

Designs, develops, and operates processes or unit operations to create a diverse range of products. Evaluates and manipulates the chemical properties of various substances used in the fabrication of new products. Designs, models evaluates, and implements chemical processes, instrumentation, and equipment to ensure effectiveness in engineering and design. Performs trials, tests, and/or experiments to support engineering, production, and/or R&D activities. Applies the principles of chemistry, nuclear science, biology, physics, material science, math, and engineering to solve problems that involve the production, use or conversion of chemicals, materials, and energy. Uses the principles of biology and the tools of engineering to mimic biological systems to create products or to modify and control biological systems so that they can replace, augment, sustain, or control chemical and mechanical processes.


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

BS/BA and 5+ years of relevant work experience -OR- MS/MA and 3+ years of relevant work experience -OR- PhD with 1+ year of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

Applied chemistry, organic chemistry or chemical engineering with experience in biomass or waste processing Experience with hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL)  Process scale-up from bench-scale to pre-pilot scale Risk analysis, safety analysis and HAZOP studies Design of Experiments, Research Design, and Statistical Sampling Understanding of the operational needs for conducting applied chemical and engineering scale research activities Understanding and experience of hydrothermal liquefaction, operating a fractionalization column and other separations technologies, biomass to fuels and products Track record of working with complex systems Biobased polymers and / or polymer recycling Safe operations of engineer scale unit operations Excellent presentation, verbal and written communication skills, with a demonstrated ability for writing concisely and clearly, are required. Member of external professional community. Presenter at national or international forums.
Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment

The work involves significant laboratory and complex systems operations. High risk activities include systems operating at high temperatures and high pressures, biological processing, and complex chemical hazards.
