PNNL is seeking a mid career Mechanical/Nuclear/Aerospace engineer with experience, knowledge, and a focus on related nuclear and space technologies. Expertise in space reactors or microreactors is especially desirable. The successful candidate, in addition to fundamental Mechanical and Nuclear engineering analysis, design, and materials expertise, will have specialized knowledge in aerospace applications for nuclear power. Experience with nuclear reactor analyses, and the security and safety related aspects for space-based applications is desired. Certification in spacecraft/satellite research, development, design, and operations is a plus. The candidate will be part of the Nuclear, Chemical and Biological Division. Our mission includes the science, technology development, and operational expertise to neutralize emerging national security threats. In this role, the key responsibilities of the successful candidate will be to:

Work with Project Managers and sponsors and serve as an engineer and subject matter expert (SME) to analyze detailed technologies, develop concepts, final designs, and strategies for countering space platform related emerging national security threats. Work on complex engineering topics where analysis of unique situations and data requires and in-depth evaluation and assessment of a variety of dynamic factors. Exercise judgement in selecting strategy approaches, methods, techniques, and criteria that will generate the optimum solution and results.  Maintain an understanding of and knowledge of key project issues and initiatives that will allow for proposing improvements and expanding the project portfolio. Expertise in core engineering topics with strong analytical thinking and using skills in areas such as physics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, nuclear materials science, neutronics, thermal hydraulics, radiation detection, nuclear material processing, and radiation transport codes. Developing and writing proposals and socializing them with potential sponsors Maintain effective working relationships with other project engineers, project managers, and stakeholders. Develop positive influence across project interest groups and external organizations and partners to move engineering concepts forward to viable solutions. Recommend innovative designs and strategies that can be applied to meet project goals. Author technical white papers, design drawings, technical documentation, invention reports and journal articles describing related unclassified technological advances in assigned areas of expertise. Maintain interactions with and facilitate collaboration among a diverse set of multi-disciplined PNNL and external teams. Frequent communication with project points of contact is expected and required with the ability to effectively interface with others to develop solutions and capabilities that will accomplish project missions. This position may require occasional travel to project sponsors, other national laboratories, and industry partners. If candidate cannot be onsite at PNNL, travel to a secure location weekly will be required. The position will require engineering work on non-sensitive, sensitive, and classified information as required by the assigned project topics. The incumbent must demonstrate an ability to manage sensitive information while influencing positive outcomes. The person in this position must recognize and accept that they will be working in technical areas associated with the National Security of the United States.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

BS/BA and 5+ years of relevant work experience -OR- MS/MA and 3+ years of relevant work experience -OR- PhD with 1+ year of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

Active Q/SCI Clearance with polygraph Master’s degree or PhD in mechanical or nuclear engineering with related years of aerospace and nuclear industry experience described above. Excellent oral and written communication skills, including detailed technical and science writing ability conveying complex information accurately. Ability to develop technical solutions to a variety of problems with highly complex scope that is based on national policies and industry standards. Experience, knowledge of, and certification on spacecraft/satellite design and operations. Experience in the research or development of space nuclear reactors, microreactors, and/or their energy conversion systems.

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.
