Job Overview:

This position serves to enhance the communication and storytelling efforts of the Forestry Division. The Forestry Division Communication Specialist is responsible for creating engaging narratives that highlight the Forestry Division's initiatives related to the Forest Action Plan (FAP) and to generate support of and participation in FAP objectives and projects. The position requires a blend of strong organizational skills, impactful writing, and the ability to engage with various stakeholders both in person and through digital platforms. The position reports to the Forestry Division Communications Coordinator.

Essential Functions (Major Duties or Responsibilities): These job functions are the essential duties of the position and are not all-inclusive of all the duties that may be assigned to the incumbent.

Forest Action Plan Communications:

Perform public relations, outreach, and education to inform interested parties of activities and initiatives related to the Forest Action Plan and to generate support of and participation in FAP objectives and projects. Implement the comprehensive strategic communication plan into storytelling and Forest Action Plan outreach efforts. Stay informed of forest assessment and action planning issues and events through constant contact with the Forest Action Planners, Communications Coordinator, and other stakeholders who have information or can anticipate events. Create narratives that resonate with diverse audiences, leveraging both written and visual content. Work with Communications Coordinator, Forestry Action Planner and communication contractors to develop and disseminate educational material and messaging released by MFAC and relevant to the FAP. Prepare and deliver factual and compelling presentations to various audiences across the state to support the interests and goals of the Forest Action Plan. This includes presenting at meetings and conferences to represent the DNRC's efforts to develop and implement the FAP and providing information regarding strategies, objectives and required resources. Maintain regular contact with key staff at other agencies including the Governor's office, the U.S. Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, etc. who are involved in forest assessment and action planning. Arrange for meetings, exchanges of information and documents, and possible joint news releases or other communications. Write, develop, or edit materials, including brochures, press releases, feature articles, etc., at the request of the Communications Coordinator and Deputy Forestry Division Administrator. Conduct in-person and virtual interviews to gather insights and build trust with stakeholders, using these stories to foster a deeper understanding of forestry initiatives. This may involve traveling through the sate and working in the field.

Forestry Division Communications: 

Coordinate internal and external Forestry Division communications to ensure timely dissemination of accurate information in a professional and understandable manner. Establish short and long-term goals and objectives for the Forestry Division's public information program and coordinate with the Communications Coordinator to meet storytelling goals. Produce and review press releases, social media posts, and other communications materials, incorporating narrative elements to make them more engaging and relatable for their intended audiences. Review communications and correspondence produced by division staff to ensure consistent messaging and professional appearance. Develop and disseminate press releases by drafting informational releases; identifying media requirements (e.g., styles, submission deadlines, publication requirements, etc.); and serving as contact for interview requests, press releases, position statements, etc Plan, coordinate and deliver presentations to various audiences across the state to provide information, solicit feedback, and promote productive information exchange on a variety of forestry issues. Maintain electronic media on the Division's web page to provide current and up-to-date information.

Minimum Qualifications {Education and Experience):

The position requires education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree in communication, journalism, public relations, political science, public administration or a related field and four (4) years progressively responsible experience in public relations, outreach, or education. Previous natural resource management or forest policy experience preferred.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Requires knowledge of the principles and practices of journalism, communication, and public relations; technical and persuasive writing; public speaking and editing; media and advertising; print and on-line production methods and techniques; social media; and the relationships between citizens and public agencies.

Requires skill in developing approaches to sensitive issues, establishing and maintaining effective relationships with others, and in the operation of a personal computer and related business applications.

Requires the ability to build and develop effective public information and promotional programs; communicate effectively; remain calm and professional and respond articulately under pressure; and to negotiate with and persuade a variety of individuals. Must have ability to quickly learn Department and Division programs and functions.

Knowledge of Montana state government organization and of forestry, natural resource management, or a related field preferred.

SPECIAL INFORMATION:Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States. A valid driver's license is required with less than 12 conviction points in the most recent completed 36 months.
