What is this career opportunity?
This position is part of a small team that strives to positively impact local government success. Our role is to assist and support local government entities (LGEs) and their elected officials, board members, and employees in complying with Montana law.
This position will provide compliance assurance of the bureau’s responsibilities by performing reviews of local government financial statements and audit reports in order to ensure compliance with various state, federal and governmental accounting regulations. This position will also include duties related to the administration of State Social Security and local government records retention and management, thus ensuring local government compliance with related federal regulations.
In addition to accounting and auditing technical experience, this position will require self-management, professional judgment, critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
We are seeking an individual with a balance of accounting or financial experience and soft skills to work with the wide variety of stakeholders we serve. While it would be great if you were seasoned in governmental accounting, we are also willing to provide guidance and training to an individual with excellent soft skills and a passion for public service.(You can learn more about Local Government Services .)
What are we looking for?

·Conduct technical research related to accounting, reporting, and auditing
·Provide guidance to LGEs on accounting and financial reporting, record keeping, and state social security matters.
·Creation and maintenance of financial reporting tools and templates
·Analysis and review of financial reports, audits, and corrective action plans
·Monitor legislative activity for impacts to LGEs on State Social Security, records management, and other statutory compliance matters.
·Liaise between state and local governments and the State Social Security Administration
·Provide training to small and large groups
Education and Experience:
·Bachelor’s degree in accounting. OR
·Other combinations of education and experience will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
General Knowledge of:
·Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
·Generally Accepted Governmental Auditing Standards (GAGAS)
Specialized Knowledge of (we are willing to train you in these areas):
·Governmental accounting, auditing, financial statements, and budgeting
·Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) statements
·Federal Office of Management and Budgets (OMB)
·Governmental accounting, auditing, financial statements, and budgeting
·State Social Security rules and regulations
