Responsibilities



Senior Radiation Protection Technologist

Provide contamination and radiation exposure control. Perform or direct surveys where procedures have not been established or where unusual conditions are expected or when film and special detection equipment are used. May direct and train others.

The duties and accountabilities specifically assigned to the Senior Radiation Protection Technologist include:

Performing routine radiological surveillances in lab spaces. Performing radiological surveys in support of work with radioactive materials. Performing air sampling in accordance with laboratory procedures. Responding to emergency situations. Working in accordance with standard procedures and Radiation Work Permits. Performing monitoring, surveying, and sampling in lab spaces as well as outdoor environments. Must successfully complete the biennial written test and oral board to qualify as a Radiation Protection Technologist. This individual will mentor various disciplines of laboratory personnel working with radioactive materials.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum of three years of health physics or radiation protection related employment. High School education or equivalent. AS degree in Nuclear Technology or equivalent, or previous experience as a Navy Engineering Laboratory Technician (ELT), or equivalent previous experience as a Radiation Protection Technologist. Fundamentals of mathematics, physics, chemistry, and science. Normally, high school mathematics through advanced algebra, and at least one semester of high school Physics and one semester of high school Chemistry. Fundamentals of nuclear process systems, operations, and maintenance. Reading and comprehensive level sufficient to follow procedures, prepare survey maps, and write survey reports. Ability to work in a support role, including communicating verbal instructions to others. Physical requirements: Must be medically qualified, or be capable of qualifying, to wear approved respiratory protective equipment (air purifying respirator, airline respirator, etc.) Must be able to bend, kneel, and climb a ladder.

Preferred Qualifications:

Five or more years of health physics or radiation protection related employment. Certification by the National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists is highly desirable. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Familiarity with standard office suite and radiation protection-related software applications.
Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment

Special/Hazardous Working Conditions or Environment: Complexities related to the position, working environment, special challenges, etc.:

Will work in laboratory spaces used for research with various chemicals as well as radiological materials. This position requires the use of protective equipment during routine work as well as worked planned for special circumstances. Occasional hands-on work with radioactive material, work in radiation fields, and involvement in radiological emergency response organization is required. Working near or with hazardous materials such as Asbestos, Beryllium, Magnetic Fields, radioactive materials or Radiation Zones. Job assignments may involve working near hazardous materials such as nuclear, fissionable, and dangerous waste. Position may be subjected to working around radiation, chemicals, asbestos, lasers, carcinogens, and other material in a laboratory environment. Support lab decontamination, decomissioning, and construction as needed. Potential for shift work if the need arises.
Additional Information

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.

Note: Applicants will be considered ineligible for security clearance processing by the U.S. Department of Energy until non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for 12 months can be demonstrated.


Testing Designated Position

This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP). The candidate selected for this position will be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing for illegal drugs, including marijuana, consistent with the Controlled Substances Act and the PNNL Workplace Substance Abuse Program.
