Richland, United States Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Full time

Responsibilities

Must have fundamental technical knowledge of metrology and understanding of the functionality of instrumentation for radiation measurements, flow, temperature, and pressure. Must have the ability to work closely with all RMI staff and projects. Receives guidance on new assignments, making preliminary selections on technical alternatives; independently completes recurring assignments. Defines and leads project work at a small task/project level, reporting results on time and on budget. Contributes to proposals. Embraces expectations for quality, safety, operational rigor, security, and continuous improvement. This position involves planning and executing radiation testing experiments and the subsequent interpretation and reporting of the data. The position also involves planning and execution of radiation detector R&D. Although the candidate will initially work under close supervision of senior engineers and scientists, it is expected that they will develop to perform experiments and report results with little direct supervision. The successful candidate will demonstrate flexibility in performing R&D in a number of different areas, but is expected to focus on irradiation testing and radiation detector R&D. The successful candidate is expected to accurately and precisely characterize (dose rate, uniformity, energy profile) the radiation fields used for irradiations, using both passive and active dosimetry methods.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

BS/BA and 2+ years of relevant work experience -OR- MS/MA or higher

Preferred Qualifications:

BS or advanced degree in science or engineering

Metrology & Instrumentation experience for radiation, flow, temperature, and pressure

Experience with instrument calibrations

Experience working under and implementing quality requirements associated with ISO/IEC 17025, ASME NQA-1, and/or NVLAP

Software quality control experience

Experience working in radiological facilities

Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment

Laboratory work will be performed in PNNL laboratory facilities and involves working with radiation generating devices and other typical laboratory hazards such as chemicals and mechanical devices. TDP testing is required due to the handling of accountable materials and sealed sources.
Additional Information

Due to business needs and client space, US Citizenship is required.

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is subject to the Department of Energy Unclassified Foreign Visits & Assignments Program site, information, technologies, and equipment access requirements.

Testing Designated Position

This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP). The candidate selected for this position will be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing for illegal drugs, including marijuana, consistent with the Controlled Substances Act and the PNNL Workplace Substance Abuse Program.
