Location and Duration: Based out of The Dalles, OR,  we have a  full-time seasonal position from July 1, 2024 through October 31, 2024

(These are estimated dates. Length of season(s) may be shortened or extended depending on project needs, funding, or factors beyond the project’s control).

What you will do:

The primary role of this position is to Gather detailed salmonid harvest data from sport and/or Indian fisheries on the lower Deschutes River. Some of the duties will include:

  • Determine natural or hatchery origin of fish harvested.
  • Determine number of fishers and time spent fishing.
  • Record fish mark and fishers use data.
  • Collect coded wire fish tags from hatchery fish.
  • Summarize harvest and use data.
  • Routinely answers questions from the public associated with Deschutes fisheries and Department management programs.

Working Conditions:

  • Requires long days driving and working outdoors. The employee must operate a vehicle on gravel roads sometimes in adverse weather, hike over rough terrain, sometimes in inclement weather, wade in rivers and swift streams on slippery rocks, and work in remote areas.
  • Requires interaction regularly with anglers and to be presentable and courteous to the public.
  • Work is performed in a remote location that lacks direct communication (i.e., radio, telephone).
  • Ability to accurately interpret instructions and written fishing laws and regulations.
  • Requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day. This includes working at all hours and workdays in excess of eight hours. Work exceeding 40 hours per week requires prior approval by the supervisor. Position is eligible for overtime.

Requirements/Requested Skills:

Minimum qualifications are not established for this position; however, we are seeking applicants with the following experience or skills. Preference for interviews may be given to candidates with these skills and background:

  • Experience conducting fish (creel) surveys, identifying adult and juvenile fish species (especially salmonids), collecting and accurately recording field data, computer skills, and customer service)
  • Self-motivation, adaptability to varied conditions, and responsibility for data quality.
  • Ability to conduct field work under a variety of weather conditions ranging from heat in summer to cold in winter.
  • Anyone who has or are in pursuit of a Fisheries or Wildlife Science degree or related degree in biological/ecological sciences.
