Based out of The Dalles, OR, this is a full time, permanent position.

What you will do:

The primary purpose of this position is to assist in the operational activities of Wildlife programs. This includes inventory, census, and other biological data collection of wildlife species for management and research programs, handling wildlife damage complaints, identifying and improving wildlife habitats, conducting limited administration activities, and more. Some of the duties will include:

  • Wildlife Management/Damage Control: Assess damage to crops and property by wildlife, dispense animal damage control information and repellents, set up crop damage control agreements, issue damage control permits.
  • Inventories: Conduct census for big game, waterfowl, upland game & non-game, assist with enforcement of State Fish and Wildlife laws and regulations, contact hunters for biological and census information.
  • Habitat: Install and maintain habitat structures such as riparian fences, guzzlers, and food plot plantings, assist with weed control and farming activities on district lands.
  • Research: Assist with trapping and radio collaring projects in the district.
  • Administration: Tag bobcats, bears, cougars, and river otters, prepare miscellaneous reports, administer rehabilitation and trapper education tests, handle complaints and information from the general public.
  • Equipment Maintenance and Operation: Assist in the maintenance of vehicles and field equipment, maintenance of compound and buildings.

Working Conditions:

  • This role involves physical tasks in rugged terrain and inclement weather conditions. Travel by air, foot, vehicle, or horseback may be required.
  • Public contacts may involve challenging situations, necessitating a well-developed sense of diplomacy.
  • This position requires occasional use of a firearm to deliver immobilization drugs and projecting nets for wildlife capture, euthanizing injured or sick wildlife, killing or hazing nuisance animals or birds, collecting animals for research or other studies, and protection from dangerous animals in close quarters.
  • This position requires an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Safety Education Card for on-the-job use of quads (Class 1 ATVs) obtained through the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, accessible at the following website: .   • This position requires the possession of a Public Pesticide Applicator License (PPAL). On your application, be sure to indicate in your job description if you have a PPAL.   • This position requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, and does not exceed forty (40) hours in a workweek. Work exceeding 40 hours per week requires prior approval by the supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science or a closely-related Bachelor's degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework; OR
  • Three years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program that included one year of at least two of the following: gathering data, analyzing data, or preparing reports,
