Duties

This position serves as a Permanent Seasonal Park Ranger.

Primary Duties : This position will be vital to the operations and messaging of the museum.

Fee collection, Educational program delivery, Visitor contact and communication, and Community outreach projects. Secondary Duties : NHOTIC is considered a developmental site by the BLM. One of our core missions is working with and mentoring early career seasonal and permanent employees. In addition to the primary duties and subject to workflow considerations our goal is to provide additional training and experience during the season. We try to work with the seasonal to find trainings and projects that relate to your long-term career goals and interest, that will help you be more competitive for future positions.
The BLM's Vale District which oversees NHOTIC, Baker Field Office, and Malheur Field Office, manage recreation, frosty, rangeland, wildlife biology, archaeology, and geology programs and NHOTIC houses one of the three Museum repositories managed by the BLM as well as an exhibit production workshop. If interested in exploring training and project work outside of the standard park ranger duties, we will work with the seasonal to explore training and project work in these program areas during the course of their time here at NHOTIC.

U.S. Citizenship required May be required to complete background investigation and drug screening. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males Must provide resume and supporting documents (See required documents). You cannot hold an active real estate license, nor can you have an interest or hold stocks in firms with interest in Federal Lands. If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.

Qualifications

This is a Career-Seasonal position and subject to release and recall procedures. Selectee will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience. If qualifying based on education, a copy of your unofficial transcripts must be provided with your application.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
To be considered minimally qualified for this position, you must demonstrate that you have the required specialized experience and/or education for the respective grade level in which you are applying:

General experience at GS-04 is defined as experience in administrative, professional, technical, investigative, or other responsible work that provided a familiarity with natural or cultural history; fish or wildlife habitat characteristics; techniques of resource protection and use; recreational use of public lands and facilities; enforcement of laws, rules, or regulations; fire prevention techniques and fire suppression method; or the practice of interpersonal relations skills in dealing with the general public. Experience in substantive and relevant secretarial, clerical or trades and crafts work is also qualifying if pertinent to the position to be filled. Experience of a routine nature, such as typing, filing, maintaining records or other non-specialized tasks is not qualifying.

OR

Education : Two years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. Related course work is course work in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth science, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience : A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of by 60. Add the two percentages.

You may combine general and/or specialized experience and education to meet the minimum qualifications.

Specialized Experienc e GS-04: Applicants must have one full year of general experience may have been in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, or other park-related work. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include, but are not limited to the following: Park guide or tour leader work; law enforcement or investigative work; archeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and /or fire management work in a park, recreation or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations.

Specialized Experience GS-05: Applicants must have one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing the following: (1) assisting with the daily operations of a recreation site that provides camping, or picnic areas; (2) providing visitor information for recreational facilities; (3) monitoring recreation areas and wilderness study areas (WSAs)s; (4) ensuring customer use areas are free of visible safety hazards.

OR

Education: Successful completion of at least a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university with 24 semester hours of related course work in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources that has provided the knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in this position.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.

Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing the following: (1) providing visitor information on the park's historical and natural features, travel routes, site use opportunities, or park activities; (2) inspecting facilities to ensure compliance with rules and regulations; (3) preparing recreation activities and/or sites for visitor use; (4) working with others to gather data and/or facilitate park usage.

OR
Education: Successfully completed one (1) year of graduate education in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources, or another closely related field that provided the knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts.

OR
Met the requirements for Superior Academic Achievement by earning a Bachelor's degree in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources, or another closely related field that provided the knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance, with at least one of the following: (1) a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher based on a 4.0 scale; (2) a 3.5 GPA or higher for required courses completed in a major field of study during junior and senior year of a 4-year college or university; (3) class standing of upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or a major subdivision of the college, such as the College of Liberal Arts, based on completed courses; or (4) membership in a National Scholastic Honor Society certified by the Association of College Honor Societies, excluding freshman honor societies. Combination: Have a combination of education and experience as described above that, when converted to percentages, equal at least 100% of the total requirement. When combining education with experience, first determine your total qualifying education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level; then determine your experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; finally, add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify this grade level. Note: You must submit a copy of your transcripts.

Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.
