Introduction

The Loudoun County, Virginia, Department of Planning & Zoning is seeking an experienced professional planner to manage the discretionary review process of land development applications in a large and expanding multifaceted community that is leading growth in the Washington, metropolitan area. 

Job Summary

The Department is focused on providing high quality customer service and offers unique opportunities to gain in-depth and diverse experiences in the planning profession, to include: reviewing and processing a variety of land development applications for rural, historic, suburban, and urban portions of the county, administering a new Zoning Ordinance that implements the Countys comprehensive plan, developing solutions to a broad range of complex land use issues such as affordable housing, sustainability, data centers, renewable energy, and energy storage and engaging in community outreach to ensure equitable planning and zoning practices.

This position provides recommendations to the Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors and routinely presents at night meetings. During project review, this position will coordinate with other departments and agencies, prioritize tasks, meet critical deadlines, negotiate with applicants, autonomously manage multiple assignments, and present cohesive technical analysis to decision-makers. This position plays a large role in the implementation of the Loudoun County 2019 General Plan and is part of the planning team that will guide the evolution of the Countys diverse Place Types, including rural, suburban, transitional, and urban communities. 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Planning, Public Administration, Public Policy, Business Administration, or a related field; six (6) years of related work experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Progressively responsible work experience at a level that required management of complex planning and land use projects is preferred. Experience using ArcGIS and Bluebeam Revu software is desired. American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification is desired or the ability to achieve certification within one (1) year. 

Job Contingencies and Special Requirements

Successful candidate will undergo criminal and DMV background checks. This position requires a valid drivers license 

This position requires an analytical thinker with real-word experience in land planning, building and site design review, and resource preservation. The ability to manage a high case load, prioritize tasks and meet critical deadlines is required. Must have strong written and verbal communication skills as well as the ability to adapt to a variety of situations including frequent interactions with staff, applicants, top governmental officials, and citizens. Attendance at night meetings after normal business hours is expected.

Teleworking two (2) days per week is an option after a training period. Relocation assistance is available to successful candidates who live more than forty (40) miles away.
