Job Duties

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts invites applications from motivated, detail-oriented candidates for the position of Registration Assistant. The Registration Assistant provides valuable support to the Registration Department for activities related to the permanent collection and exhibitions.

Specific duties related to the permanent collection include processing new acquisitions and loans, preparing documentation and completing data entry using the TMS collections database, and inventorying collections. For special exhibitions, this position will support exhibition documentation and provide administrative and organizational assistance during installations.

This entry-level position provides a flexible schedule of up to 28 hours per week working onsite at the Museum, with an annual maximum of 1,450 hours (May 1 – April 30).

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of museum standard practices, procedures, and policies, as well as registration, collections management, and conservation practices related to the documentation, handling, and presentation of artwork.

Strong Microsoft Office suite skills; excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills. Self-motivated with the ability to organize and maintain multiple projects successfully.
Experience equivalent to an undergraduate or graduate degree in Art History, Museum Studies, or related field.

Additional Considerations

Experience working in a Registration or Collections Management department in a museum environment, either in a paid position or internship, preferred.
Previous experience with a collections management system, such as TMS, preferred.
Selected candidates must pass a criminal history background check.
