What we are looking for:

ODF is looking for a Natural Resource Specialist 1 – FFR Forester to lead a crew which works to accomplish forest restoration projects on Federal lands under Good Neighbor Authority agreements, assist with grant implementation on Federal and non-Federal lands, and provide assistance to Central Oregon District staff as needed.

This position will assist the FFR Unit Forester to help USFS and BLM in accomplishing their management goals including but not limited to forestry services, timber sale planning, timber sale preparation, restoration service projects, and implementation activities including but not limited to timber stand improvement through forest thinning, prescribed fire preparation, data collection, unit layout, and pile burning.  In addition, this position will perform fire suppression duties as needed. 

The person in this position is expected to have or be able to acquire FFT1 or higher ICS fire qualification(s) upon hire, successfully complete ICS S-212, and be able to perform firefighting duties as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in forestry or any natural resource area.

- OR -

  • Three years of experience in Forestry or any natural resource program area

  • Successful applicants must take and pass the physical fitness Work Capacity Test at the arduous level.

  • Must have or be able to acquire FFT1 or higher ICS fire qualification(s) upon hire, and successfully complete ICS S-212

  • Driver’s License Check - This position requires the operation of a state vehicle for the purpose of conducting official State business. If your license is from outside Oregon, you must submit at least a three-year court/DMV printout.  If you have an Oregon driver’s license, a record check will be conducted on the top candidate to ensure a valid license and acceptable driving record.

  • Technical forestry skills (e.g. timber cruising, taking forest measurements, timber marking, unit layout, insect and disease identification, GIS and spatial mapping, surveys/data collection, etc.) and experience with forestry tools (e.g. Relaskop, clinometer, laser, etc.)

  • Strong leadership qualities and experience leading a crew in a field environment.

  • Proficient in safe chainsaw operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and minor repairs, as well as proper felling and bucking procedures. Preferably qualified as a Type 2 faller.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate both verbally and in writing in a clear and professional manner.

  • Experience in wildland fire suppression, preferably qualified as FFT1 or higher.

  • Knowledge of responsible timber harvest principles and logging systems typically utilized in Eastern Oregon forest types.
