Permanent Cafeteria Kitchen Assistant

This position is responsible for all aspects of the timely preparation, service, setup, cleanup and other operational elements of the School Nutrition Program to produce and serve meals meeting school meal pattern requirements to students in a pleasant, efficient and sanitary manner.

Educational Level: No minimum

Pay: Based upon experience and education. Starting rate $10.15 per hour.

Candidate must attend an ESS orientation/training session and complete required district and state

credentialing requirements (Background check, Fingerprinting)

Required to complete O.N.E (Orientation for Nutrition Employees) within the first year of employment. The class is 30 hours of instruction and is offered once per year.

Proficiency Skills: Written and oral communication, math skills adequate for following schedules, recipes and basic record keeping (keeping count and recording the count), and daily cleaning of dishes used and the kitchen and dining rooms. Food production/operation skills desirable.

Personal Skills: Clean and well-groomed and in excellent health.

Physical Requirements

Position requires the ability to continuously stand for long periods, walk, bend over in deep sink to wash dishes and able to have hands in water and detergent for long periods. Squatting, sweeping/mopping floors, and going in and out of hot (outside, kitchen) and cold (freezers/coolers) environments regularly. Ability to lift heavy boxes and other kitchen items weighing up to +/- 50 lbs. many times throughout the day.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintains a pattern of prompt and regular daily (Monday-Friday unless otherwise noted) attendance.
  • Notifies manager of absence(s) in a timely manner using approved channels of communication.
  • Demonstrates appropriate verbal and written communication skills for communicating with co-workers daily and adheres to chain of command.
  • Maintains a professional, clean, and well-groomed appearance as appropriate for job responsibilities. Jewelry or watches are not allowed per Georgia Food Code.
  • Perform duties assigned by manager/assistant manager in the preparation and serving of food and in daily breakdown and cleanup of kitchen operations.
  • Exhibits time on task and a flexible, cooperative, progressive and hard-working attitude and style.
  • Prepares food according to menu and standard practices for kitchen (i.e. Standardized recipes, package directions).
  • Adheres to food safety criteria during preparation, service and storage of food according to proper food safety guidelines to ensure a clean and safe food service environment.
  • Keeps work area clean and free of safety hazards.
  • Wear appropriate uniform and shoes to ensure a safe working environment and to prevent accidents.
  • Reports accidents to the food service manager immediately to be properly documented and treated.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and proficiency in the use of kitchen appliances and equipment as applicable to job responsibilities.
  • Operates and maintains kitchen appliances and equipment according to accepted standards.
  • Report any equipment needing repair to the food service manager.
  • Sets up serving lines and serves appropriate quantities of nutritious meals to meet federal, state and local guidelines.
  • Assists in developing a climate in the cafeteria that inspires students and faculty to want to have their lunches there.
  • Ensures that the serving line flows smoothly; serves and interacts with students in a positive and friendly manner.
  • Maintains record of food used for menu management records and assists manager in ordering, receiving and control of food and supplies.
  • Completes all cleaning assignments daily.
  • Understands the purpose of the school nutrition program and its relationship to the child.
  • Participates in staff meetings, professional learning, serves on staff committees, attends training sessions as required and participates in activities that will promote the school nutrition program.
  • Maintains and improves knowledge and skills to promote proficiency in all aspects of day-to-day operations of an efficient well-organized and sanitary school nutrition program.
  • Shows initiative and assumes responsibility for all aspects of job responsibilities; performs routine duties and tasks with little or no direct supervision.
  • Acts in a professional manner and maintains a professional attitude towards the public and colleagues; adheres to culture diversity guidelines and exhibits the fundamentals of good public/customer service. Follows federal and state laws, abides by all Code Ethics for Educators, as well as school, system, state and federal regulations and policies.
  • Exhibits a strong work ethic and communicates well with manager, coworkers, school staff and students.
  • Enhances the climate of the building and the morale of colleagues.
  • Demonstrates loyalty to the school system and administration.
  • Perform all other duties assigned by manager, school administration, School Nutrition Director or ESS.
