DEFINITION

Under direction of the Public Works Superintendent, the Crew Supervisor will coordinate, participate and supervise the work of staff in one or more of the following areas: Fleet Maintenance, Parks and Sewers/Storm Drain, Street Lighting and Building Maintenance, Streets and Traffic Safety. Performs related technical and complex work within assigned area of responsibility. 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Supervises and coordinates the work of crews in the Public Works Department; oversees work performed by contractors and enforces compliance with contractual requirements and City codes

Works with other City departments to coordinate projects that include Public Works duties

Implements comprehensive inspection procedures to ensure the highest standard of repairs and maintenance and safety practices

Reports malfunctions and damages and proposes remedies to the Superintendent

Provides input, implements and monitors maintenance schedules and quality control procedures; manages work orders and budget preparation

Manages contractors responsible for providing city services

Researches purchasing of materials, supplies and equipment

Tests new products and related items and makes recommendations based on these tests

Trains crews in the use of new equipment, safety and standard operating procedures

Checks related facilities and reports malfunctions

Receives and responds to service complaints from public and City departments

Supervises employees in their areas of work including maintenance methods, procedures, techniques and safe work habits

Supervises and assigns the work of the crew members including special projects

Manages employee performance and disciplinary issues and seeks guidance and approval from Superintendent

Completes Annual Employee Performance Evaluation forms for assigned staff and meets with staff regarding their performance

Assists with interviews as needed

Provides guidance on difficult and complex problems

Prepares and issues work orders and evaluates work upon completion

Writes necessary reports and coordinates maintenance and repair work with other city departments

Maintains inventory of tools, parts, and orders supplies and materials as necessary

May act as superior in his absence

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: 

Knowledge of: 

Operations, services, and activities of a maintenance program
Principles and practice of supervision; 

Ability to:

Select, supervise, motivate and train assigned staff
Supervise and evaluate the work of others
Read and interpret blue prints, diagrams, plans and specifications
Interpret and enforce policies, codes, rules and regulations
Make accurate calculations
Communicate clearly and effectively; both orally and in writing
Prepare and maintain accurate records and reports
Respond to complaints and inquiries from the public in a tactful manner
Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with City employees and the general public
Provide effective and high quality customer service.

Education and Experience: Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain this required knowledge would be:

Educational achievement equivalent to graduation from high school and a minimum of two years of experience at the semi-skilled level in parks or public works maintenance activities including pipe laying and placing and finishing of concrete.

Licenses/Certificates: Possession of a valid Class C California Driver’s License with a safe driving record is required and must be maintained as valid during the course of employment.

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a field environment; to walk, stand, and sit for prolonged periods of time; to frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach, twist, grasp, and make repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties; to climb unusual heights on ladders; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull at least 50Ibs of weight; to operate assigned equipment and vehicles; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction.

Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
