Description

As part of the innovative educational approach at SCDS, fourth grade is integrated into the Middle School Division. Operating on a middle school schedule, dedicated instructors bring expertise in various subjects, ensuring a comprehensive and engaging learning experience. The Fourth Grade Humanities Teacher plays a pivotal role in crafting and delivering the humanities curriculum, nurturing students' critical thinking and literacy skills. Additionally, they are responsible for advising a small group of fourth graders to foster a supportive and enriching academic and personal growth environment. SCDS middle school teachers embody an excitement for teaching and are committed to supporting the unique needs of early adolescents, including cognitive and social-emotional development. The SCDS Humanities Department's mission is to cultivate engaged learners who understand and embrace the complexity of the human experience through close examination of literature, history, and current events. The Department aims to nurture curiosity and critical thinking and teach students to communicate their thoughts, opinions, and findings through speaking and writing.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have an educational background in Humanities (English, Language Arts, and/or History) and experience teaching Humanities classes in the intermediate/middle grades. Minimum requirements are a Bachelor's degree in a Humanities field from an accredited university or college and a commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion curriculum and goals. Social-emotional learning is an integral part of middle school. Teachers serve as advisors to a group of students, building positive relationships with students (and their families) and fostering a sense of belonging through the advisory program curriculum. Learning at Sonoma Country Day School is not limited to the classroom. The school's outdoor education program, student-generated clubs, and athletic offerings are hallmarks of the student experience. Candidates will be expected to share in the day-to-day life of the SCDS middle school community.

Expectations

This is a full-time position that begins in mid-August 2024. Hours are minimally 7:45 am to 4:00 pm, with a weekly faculty meeting until 4:30, although team planning meetings may require additional time. Additionally, all faculty members share daily supervision duties at the school. Occasional evening and weekend commitments are required throughout the school year.
