Department Profile

Early Care and Education Services at UCSB provides full day, year-round child care and family support services to student, staff and faculty families. This inclusive program serves over 200 children, ages 3 months to 5 years daily, at two sites in a play and relationship-based approach to learning. The University Children's Center on the main campus cares for children ages 3 months to 3 years and the Orfalea Family Children's Center on the semi-rural West Campus cares for children ages 3 months to 5 years. ECCES offers tuition assistance to income and need eligible families through funding from the CA Department of Education and has been accredited by NAEYC since 1990.

Brief Summary of Job Duties

Under the guidance of the Child Development Center (CDC)-2 Lead, the Child Development Center (CDC) 2- Teacher collaborates in the planning, implementing, and evaluating of developmentally appropriate curriculum for children in the Early Childhood Care and Education Services (ECCES) as prescribed by the National Association of the Education of Young Children. The CDC 2- Teacher shares the responsibility with the CDC 2-Lead to set up the physical (indoor and outdoor) environment to meet changing needs, maintains a safe, clean, and pleasant environment, models and instructs other adults in best practice, and provides information to parents regarding their children as well as general child development information. CDC 2- Teacher is also responsible for assuring compliance with codes of all State and local governing contracting agencies; and works cooperatively and collegially with other staff members of the Early Childhood Care and Education Services Department.

Required Qualifications

High School Diploma
Minimum completion of 6 ECE units working towards 12 core ECE units (based on necessary requirements to qualify for a Child Development Permit through the CA Commission on Teaching Credentialing
Preferred Qualifications

AA in Child Development or related field
BA in Child Development or related field
Minimum of one year experience in Early Childhood Education field (can include student teaching)

Job Functions/Percentage of Time/Duties

Classroom Programming: 60%

Program follows accreditation criteria established by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). The Early Childhood Care and Education Services philosophy and goals are followed in all areas of the curriculum and interaction. In addition, Resources for Infant Educarers (RIE) philosophy influences the Infant and Toddler Program.

1. In collaboration with CDC 2-Lead, develops weekly plans and implements developmentally appropriate curriculum (activity plan) to nurture and stimulate all domains of children's development in their care.

2. Infant classrooms employ a "primary caregiver" model for all aspects of teacher-child interactions especially during primary care routines (i.e. feeding, diapering, comforting, and napping).

3. Provide responsive care to all children by adapting daily care giving routines and plans to the interests and needs of the individual child and the group.

4. Meet weekly with CDC 2-Lead to coordinate classroom curriculum and to evaluate children's individual needs.

5. Demonstrate cultural competency and respect for the child's background by incorporating the cultural, linguistic and familial values and beliefs into the childcare program and activity plans.

6. Exchange information and serve as a member of a multidisciplinary intervention/prevention team (i.e. IEP, IFSP, mandated reporter, etc.)

7. Shares in responsibility with CDC-2 Lead to complete child transitions and orientation of the classroom with parents including an intake conference prior to child's first day of attendance.

8. Maintain ongoing, respectful and sensitive open communication with families/caregivers. Interacts daily with families. Gives brief verbal reports and written notes when necessary. a. Ensure each family receives an opportunity to build strong relationships and experience clear communication with staff. b. Under the guidance of the CDC 2-Lead participates in two scheduled family conferences per year with each family. Submits conference documentation to program coordinator as needed. c. Shares the responsibility with the CDC 2-Lead to maintain a classroom family information board that includes, but is not limited to: a copy of weekly activity plan, classroom daily schedule, snack and lunch menu, etc. d. Ensures that 1-2 weekly messages are posted on Parent Square from a member of the teaching team of the classroom (teacher or lead teacher). e. Reports family changes in schedules and excessive absences to administration in a timely manner.

9. Assures a healthy, safe, clean and developmentally appropriate environment for children established by Title 5, Title 22, and NAEYC (indoor and outdoor environments).

10. Assist with functioning and monitoring of nutrition and food service in compliance with CDE and licensing guidelines (Title 5, Title 22, and NAEYC).

11. Staff must act in accordance with both the ECCES and university mission statements.

Management: 20%

1. Is knowledgeable of and follows State licensing guidelines at all times (i.e. Title 22 and California Department of Education Title 5). Maintain a safe and healthy environment within guidelines established by state licensing.

2. Share the responsibility with the CDC 2-Lead to maintain accurate, complete and timely child, family, and agency records; completes daily meal and attendance records in accordance with Title 22 and Title 5.

3. Share the responsibility with the CDC 2-Lead to maintain up to date emergency forms, curriculum plans, individual child development profile and record as needed.

4. Complete and report any symptoms of child abuse to supervisor and or child abuse hotline.

5. Complete daily health checks regarding hygiene, safety, and overall well-being of the children. Administer medications as needed (when proper licensing regulations/documentation is in place) and check and maintain medications in accordance with Title 5.

6. Provide professional guidance and support on a daily basis to teaching assistants.

7. Ensure that teacher and teaching assistants are kept updated in all matters concerning the classroom and program, i.e. activity plans, policies and procedures, trainings received.

8. Provide functional on the job training and guidance of all classroom personnel (i.e. staff, interns, substitutes, and volunteers) assigned to the classroom.

9. Report all staffing and classroom concerns to supervisor in a timely manner.

10. Complete DRDP, ITERS/ECERS, and summary of findings action plan with CDC 2-Lead.

11. Contribute to the overall success of ECCES by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

12. Assumes Lead Teacher duties in her/his absence.

Child Assessment: 10%

1. Perform ongoing developmental evaluations of children as required by funding sources and develop activity plans and follow curriculum implementation that addresses the individual needs of each child.

2. Prepare developmental progress reports and assessments as needed and required: anecdotal reports, parent reports, individualized action plans, etc.

3. On an ongoing basis, plan, evaluate, and improve the physical (indoor and outdoor) environment in the classroom to create opportunities to meet the changing needs of the developing child.

Program and Professional Development: 5%

1. Participate in ongoing in-service, professional and educational development opportunities provided by ECCES, NAEYC accreditation, staff meetings, mandated trainings, etc.

2. Participate in ongoing development and evaluation of center's goals and objective.

3. Submit documentation to CDC 2-Lead and/or program coordinators on a timely basis. Documentation may include, but is not limited to: parent/teacher conference forms, assessments, activity plans, special needs forms, petty cash, professional development goals, mandated trainings (in accordance with university guidelines, Title 22, Title 5, and NAEYC accreditation).

4. Continue ongoing professional development. Complete required hours and maintain valid child development permit at all times.

5. Maintain valid Pediatric CPR and First Aid certification at all times.

6. Assume Lead Teacher duties in her/his absence.
