Summary

This Psychologist position is located in the Minneapolis VA Health Care System's Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation department within the Rehabilitation and Extended Care Integrated Clinical Care Service. This position will serve primarily on an interdisciplinary team within the inpatient Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center (PRC). This PRC unit is one of 5 PRCs located throughout the Country in the Veterans Affairs System.

Duties

This is an OPEN CONTINOUS ANNOUNCEMENT. We are accepting applications on an ongoing basis; applicants will be reviewed on a weekly basis, as long as vacancies exist.

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

Major duties include, but are not limited to:

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Provides a full range of psycho-diagnostic services including assessment and using the most appropriate psychotherapeutic techniques in providing quality care. Provide screening for cognitive deficits to address specific functional questions or to determine if a referral for a complete neuropsychological evaluation assessment is needed.
  • Provides a full range of therapeutic interventions including individual, family, couple, group psychotherapy and psycho-educational groups (i.e., anger management, coping skills), as well as specialized interventions such as behavior management and systems and/or environmental interventions. Uses evidence based interventions. Presents informed reports and educates interdisciplinary teams on the use of newly proven or evidence based intervention techniques.
  • Provides education to patients and family members regarding findings from assessment, limitations in functioning and areas of strength/functionality as well as methods for rehabilitation.
  • Provide behavioral medicine interventions to manage pain, disability, address sleep problems, facilitate weight loss, promote tobacco cessation and enhance medical compliance.
  • Consults with medical center staff on a wide variety of patient care issues. Provides consultation to other affiliated health care providers about treatment plans for patients, to ensure care is coordinated, collaborative and integrated within the overall care plan.
  • Staff psychologists may be involved in program development, evaluation and/or research activities.
  • Works with PRC team as well as MH consult service regarding suicidal patients or patients with acute MH needs
Academic/Teaching/Training:
  • May hold faculty appointment at affiliated university (i.e., University of Minnesota).
  • Will be involved in Rehab Psychology Training Program and/or Psychology Training Committee.
  • Provides leadership guidance and consultation to staff of units/teams to which assigned.
  • Will be involved in the training of psychology practicum students, interns, and postdoctoral residents.
  • Serves as a consultant to other Polytrauma staff, medical center staff and trainees and assists in their formulation of the psychological characteristics and appropriate treatment expectations regarding their patients.
Research/Program Evaluation:
  • May oversee the establishment of program monitors and outcome measurements within programs assigned using a data-driven quality assurance processes.
  • Is responsible for timely completion of all clinical charting and documentation required by the Medical Center or healthcare system, as appropriate.
  • If applicable, plans and oversees the completion of personal research programs, designed to provide information regarding program planning and relevant treatment approaches.
  • May present outcome data and research results at VA and regional or national scientific or professional meetings.
Other Significant Responsibilities:
  • Assures the needs and rights of patients and other customers are met while also supporting VA missions. Consistently communicates with customers (Veterans, active duty service members, their representatives, DoD, community providers, visitors, and all VA staff) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner, and handles conflicts and problems with patients and staff constructively and appropriately.
  • Protects printed and electronic files and data from unauthorized release, loss, alteration, or unauthorized deletion, and follows applicable regulations and instructions regarding access to computerized files, release of access codes, etc., as set out in the computer access agreement.
  • Serves on Medical Center, VISN, and National Polytrauma Care System committees or task forces as assigned.
