Under the general direction of the Outdoor Recreation Manager, the Outdoor Recreation Coordinator will help oversee the Outdoor Recreation program. This includes managing all aspects of Base Camp: Rentals and Resource Center and Day Trips within the Adventure Programs. This role includes managing equipment rentals, maintain resource center materials, planning and coordinating day trips, and ensuring excellent customer service for all BaseCamp customers. The coordinator will work closely with Adventure Programs to promote outdoor activities and provide resources.

What You Will Do:

BaseCamp Rentals Management

  • Staff Oversight: Assist with hiring, training, and supervising all BaseCamp student staff, including the development of training materials and oversight of meetings. Handle disciplinary actions and provide leadership/mentorship as needed.
  • Safety and Maintenance: Conduct inspections of rental equipment, ensuring they are in clean and safe condition. Update rental policies to adhere to industry standards.
  • Policy Enforcement: Enforce all rental policies and procedures. Provide courteous assistance to all participants using BaseCamp services.
  • Scheduling and Coordination: Develop a schedule of for BaseCamp, including classes, special events, and rentals. Coordinate the scheduling of staff and resources.
  • Equipment Management: Maintain and replace old, broken, or worn equipment. Ensure the quality of rental equipment. Recruit, train, and develop staff to manage equipment inventory and maintenance.
  • Participant Interaction: Provide educational and practical tips to all users of Basecamp equipment both for rentals and adventure programs.
  • Documentation: Create and maintain documents related to BaseCamp policies and procedures, such as the rental manual and risk management manual.
  • Customer Service: Provide excellent customer service to GCU students and staff. Assist customers in planning their personal trips, providing insight, adequate information and resources.

Resource Center Management

  • Resource Maintenance: Oversee the maintenance and organization of the resource center materials, ensuring all resources are up-to-date and in good condition.
  • Information Dissemination: Provide information and support to users seeking resources for outdoor activities. Keep resource center information current and accessible. Maximize the "Build Your Own Adventure" tool.
  • Program Development: Develop and implement new resource center programs and services to meet the needs of BaseCamp users.
  • Visual Standards: Help maintain visual standards and cleanliness of the resource center.

Day Trips Coordination

  • Trip Management: Plan and lead day trips, ensuring all safety measures are met. Coordinate logistics, including transportation, equipment, and staffing.
  • Safety and Equipment: Ensure all equipment used for day trips is safe and well-maintained. Follow safety procedures and protocols specific to day trip activities.
  • Participant Interaction: Provide guidance and support to participants during day trips, promoting a safe and enjoyable experience.
  • Event Support: Occasionally drive a passenger van to transport students for day trips and events.
  • Standardization of Skills: Create a standardization process for trip leaders, including assessing skills via workshops and tests.

Program Development and Administration

  • Marketing and Promotion: Collaborate with the Outdoor Recreation Manager and Marketing team to create marketing and advertising strategies to promote BaseCamp services and programs.
  • Revenue Management: Maintain revenue records and meet revenue goals. Create reports, including revenue, participant rosters, and other data analytics to support data-driven program decisions.
  • Budget Planning: Coordinate with the Outdoor Recreation Manager in equipment purchase and budget planning.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Event Support: Assist with Student Affairs special events as assigned.
  • Communication: Post all classes and special events on Fusion. Attend and participate in all required meetings, workshops, and retreats.
  • Ad Hoc Duties: Perform other duties as requested by professional staff.
  • Compliance: Adhere to industry standards regarding outdoor safety and equipment use.

What You Will Have:

  • Knowledge and Training: Highly proficient in conducting training for both BaseCamp rentals (equipment usage, safety protocols) and day trips (planning, safety measures, participant interaction).
  • Risk Management: Knowledgeable about outdoor recreation risk management and its governing principles, including risk assessment for day trips and equipment usage.
  • Conflict Resolution: Good conflict resolution and mediation skills.
  • Event Management: Proficient in event management, scheduling, and logistics for day trips and BaseCamp events.
  • Communication: Proficient in written and verbal communications.
  • Planning and Organization: Strong planning and organizational skills; able to handle frequent interruptions.
  • Equipment: Outdoor Equipment (kayaks, paddleboards, packrafts, sleeping pads, cooking stoves tents, sleeping bags, backpacks), and power tools.
  • Software Proficiency: Workday, Fusion, JotForm, Subitup, MS Office Suite proficiency.
  • Supervision: Oversee student workers and some student leaders.
  • Performance Goals: Set and establish performance targets.
  • Mentoring: Mentor and advise students and staff.
  • Required: Bachelor's degree in Sports Management, Parks and Recreation, Business Administration, or a related field. Valid driver's license and clean driving record. Ability to drive outside the State of Arizona. Ability to pass pre-employment background checks. Flexible schedule availability, including evenings and weekends.
  • Preferred: Wilderness First Responder certification. Leave No Trace Awareness certification. Two years of relevant work experience. Involvement in professional organizations such as NIRSA, AORE, AMGA, or PCIA.
