New York Common Pantry is one of the city's largest food pantries, providing food assistance, case management services, senior food provision, nutrition education, and hygiene services. We are a dynamic, mission-driven organization, experiencing rapid growth and expansion at this time.

NYCP is a poverty-fighting organization that reduces hunger and promotes dignity, health, and self-sufficiency by using a holistic approach to reach over 104,000 distinct people over 660,000 visitors each year. Last year, we served almost 10.2 million meals. Through an array of programs that we offer, we look to establish long-term stability for those we serve.

The Part-Time Safety Associate's primary responsibility is to ensure a safe and secure environment for the Social Services (Help 365 & Project Dignity), Hot Meals, Brown Bags, and the Food Pantry Distribution Program Services at the NYCP headquarters location. This role is tasked with patrolling, inspecting, and monitoring the premises and to help ensure the services are running smoothly and that participants have a pleasant experience.

The Part-Time Safety Associate will be responsible for ensuring that participants check in and receive their pantry distribution and hot meal/brown bag in an orderly fashion; addressing any participant disturbances and/or conflicts; ensuring that appropriate participants enter the building; and monitoring the movement of participants between the first and lower levels.

The Part-Time Safety Associate will report to the Project Dignity Program Coordinator at the 8 East 109th, New York, NY 10029 location. The schedule for this position is Wednesday through Saturday: 9 am - 5 pm; 1-hour lunch. This is a Part-Time position, up to 30 hours a week.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor the line to ensure that all participants enter the building in an orderly fashion and prevent anyone from entering the agency with weapons or who is visibly intoxicated or under the influence.
  • Evaluate situations/emergencies and use discretion to resolve the issues, notify the proper authorities ie. 911 as needed, or contact department supervisors for resolutions.
  • Assist staff in assessing potentially dangerous situations; intervene to prevent situations from escalating into violence. Assists staff in crises that may require physical interventions.
  • Issue tickets and line management to Pantry and Senior Nutrition Program participants.
  • Monitor the dining room and address any participant disturbances and/or conflicts, ensuring the proper conflict resolution is utilized.
  • Respond promptly and appropriately when staff signals for the Safety Associate; respond quickly and responsibly to any emergency or stressful situation.
  • Escort unruly participants out of the building when necessary and provide incident reports to the supervisor.
  • Contact and assist law enforcement agencies and emergency health care personnel as requested or required.
  • Monitor the movement of participants in the elevator between the first and lower levels and ensure that participants do not use the elevator to access the administrative offices on the second level.
  • Continually patrol the NYCP facility to ensure and promote a safe environment, including the lower level, first floor, second floor, and outside the front of the building.
  • Complete written detailed incident reports for every event in which physical activity is taken in response to a participant or staff situation.
  • Add to the list compiled of individuals who are banned from services and facilities.
  • Unlock and lock building entrances and elevators as needed.
  • Assist supervisor with conducting fire drills and safety programs.
  • Communicate with participants in a professional and appropriate manner.
  • Maintain a work environment that is marked by respect for others, values inclusiveness builds workforce diversity, and fosters cooperation and teamwork.
  • Assist participants with program-related inquiries and guide them to the appropriate office for services.
  • May be assigned additional duties in regards to NYCP special events such as Thanksgiving and Toy distribution that include but are not limited to ticketing and line management.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • A high school diploma or the equivalent is required.
  • Full Professional proficiency level in Spanish, French, or Mandarin is required.
  • Commitment to helping the communities in need and NYCP's work and mission.
  • Certified Security Training is required.
  • CPR and Narcan certification are recommended.
  • Ability to make good judgments and resolve conflicts.
  • Ability to remain calm and engage in stressful situations while de-escalating situations.
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills are required.
