Summary

The University of Michigan School of Information seeks to hire a postdoctoral scholar to conduct research at the intersection of Human-Computer Interaction, Urban Studies, and critical computing. The ideal start date is September 1, 2024.

This scholar will work closely with Professor Tawanna Dillahunt and the Social Innovations Group at the University of Michigan School of Information. The ( ) is dedicated to fostering sustainable and impactful solutions to complex social problems through rigorous research, collaboration, and community engagement. The postdoctoral researcher will have the opportunity to conduct research and scholarship to design sociotechnical interventions across a wide range of domains, including employment and entrepreneurship, transportation, and food systems. While there is some flexibility on the projects that the candidate engages in, ideal candidates should have a keen interest in alternative economic systems, and ethical AI systems, experience with mixed methods, and be able to lead research studies from start (conception) to finish (dissemination, publication). Duties will include designing studies, submitting IRB applications, collecting data, analyzing data, conducting literature reviews, and writing academic publications and grants. You will also coordinate and run meetings with community partners, prepare reports and presentations, provide feedback on projects, and collaborate on projects others lead.

The fellow will have opportunities to engage with other research groups, centers, and institutions depending on their interests and goals.

  • Lead and collaborate on research studies across all phases of a project as appropriate
  • Engage in other scholarly work (e.g., mentorship) as appropriate
Required Qualifications*
  • PhD in a relevant field (e.g., Human-Computer Interaction, Human-Centered Computing, Informatics, Computer Science, Urban Studies, Business) completed by the start date
  • Research ability demonstrated by conference or journal publications, book chapters, or equivalent (potentially unpublished) writing samples, requested as part of the application
Desired Qualifications*
  • Experience publishing in top peer-reviewed journals and conferences
  • Experience in project management and leadership, and other skills like scheduling
  • Excellent analytical, research, and communication skills
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Proficiency in interdisciplinary, qualitative, and quantitative research
  • A track record of conducting, publishing, and disseminating high-quality research
  • Deep familiarity with community-based participatory research approaches
  • A track record of quickly familiarizing oneself with a new area of literature
  • Grant writing and research funding skills
  • Works well individually or with teams
  • Attention to both detail and big picture; prompt, respectful, and clear communication
  • Takes initiative in setting goals and being proactive in meeting them
  • Plans ahead of deadlines; monitors and shifts priorities as needed; and is open to receiving feedback and mentorship
Work Schedule

40 hours per week; some flexibility in when those work hours occur as long as good communication and close coordination practices are in place.

Work Locations

The position is a 12-month appointment located in Ann Arbor, MI. A shared office in North Quad will be arranged. Working in person in Ann Arbor is strongly preferred because it allows for community building and engagement and supports a stronger mentor-mentee relationship. A shared office in North Quad will be provided. Hybrid and remote options can be discussed.; however, candidates must be able to conduct work in the United States. Applicants must be eligible to be employed in the United States; sponsorship to obtain such status is not available at this time.
