Job Description:
Amherst College invites applications for the Neuroscience Laboratory Coordinator position. The Neuroscience Laboratory Coordinator is a part-time, casual position with no benefits, starting at $25/hour - commensurate with experience.

Provide mentoring and support for Neuroscience courses and research of 4 faculty and up to 20 undergraduate thesis students and student research assistants working in 4 laboratories.

Support teaching and preparation of Neuroscience laboratory course sections each year.

Mentor and instruct in proper animal handling and experimental procedures including animal injections and animal surgery, and handling of toxic chemicals and biohazardous waste.

Provide support and back-up for Animal Care Technician. Oversee safety and training for students performing animal and non-animal research in the Neuroscience laboratories. Order, document, and dispense DEA schedule II and III controlled substances, including anesthetics and narcotics. Oversee ordering and equipment maintenance for Neuroscience laboratories.


Takes appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participates in the college's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.


Summary of Responsibilities:
Mentoring and support for Neuroscience courses and student research

  • Teach students proper research procedures and techniques, including proper handling of biological tissues, contaminated materials, and hazardous chemicals.
  • Support teaching and preparation of Neuroscience laboratory course sections. Prepare stock solutions as necessary for experiments including experimental stimuli and dozens of histology stains and solutions.
  • Work with professors and TAs to set up and clean up weekly labs in Neuroscience classes. Maintain and regularly update standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the care of animals and the operation of relevant equipment (e.g., cage washer and fish system pump room)
  • Maintain written records of laboratory protocols and procedures, including IACUC approved protocols.
  • Maintain regular communication with a diverse set of faculty, staff and students within the Neuroscience regarding all laboratory issues.
  • Maintain supplies, cleanliness and SAAs in all research rooms associated with the Neuroscience labs.
  • Restrain and euthanize animals, when necessary, as approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. Requires the learning and use of a CO2 gas anesthesia system.
Oversee safety and training for students performing animal and non-animal research

  • Teach students animal handling, injection, and surgical skills.
  • Oversee animal and human safety during research procedures.
Oversee ordering of supplies and equipment maintenance for Neuroscience laboratories

  • Order, document, and dispense DEA schedule II and III controlled substances including anesthetics and narcotics. Maintain strict security and storage of controlled substances in safes and locked rooms.
  • Ordering, cataloging and decrementing chemicals using the Chemical Inventory System
  • Order lab and animal supplies and cleaning supplies as needed.
  • Oversee equipment including repair, annual inspections and certifications and maintenance of an equipment inventory database.
Provide support and back-up for Animal Care Technician

  • Provide backup care for

Animal Care Technician:
Maintenance and monitoring of vertebrates and invertebrates and animal rooms for use in research and teaching.

  • Train and supervise a diverse group of students and staff hired to handle animal room chores if necessary.

Qualifications:
Required

  • Bachelor's degree in life sciences; master's degree preferred.
  • 1 to 3 years of experience working with live animals in a laboratory setting.
  • Experience with basic email, word processing and database management software.
Preferred

  • AALAS certification ([]).
  • More than 3 years of experience working with animals in a laboratory research environment.
