Job Description

The Product Development Engineer will be responsible for:

Guide projects through the stages of Nichols Portland's new product development cycle.Continuously evaluate the project's technical risks and feasibility, including its manufacturability (when relevant).Collaborate with cross-functional teams to update project costs and overall business case.Outline deliverables and obtain team approval to progress projects from concept to launch, including advanced prototyping, design and analysis, fabrication, testing, test data analysis, and final reporting.Organize meetings to review production and prototype costs, assembly processes, design accuracy, durability, and performance.Communicate with vendors to gather and review relevant information, assess compatibility, establish selection criteria, and generate purchase orders.Support testing and troubleshooting activities.Arrange team meetings for brainstorming new ideas or solving problems as needed.Keep project information up-to-date, including customer communications, test data, and timelines.Write technical reports for customer contracts and internal R&D based on collected and analyzed data.Interface with customers to request information, drawings, equipment, and clarification; provide status updates and respond to inquiries.Comply with safety standards.Maintain a neat and organized workspace.Develop new testing and analysis methods (both hardware and software).

The Successful Applicant

The successful Product Development Engineer will have MOST of what follows:

Bachelor's degree in Engineering (preferably Mechanical or Electrical) from an ABET (or equivalent) accredited institution.Proven mechanical aptitude, demonstrated either formally or informally.Preferred 3-5 years of related experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Proficient in computer applications: Excel, PowerPoint, Word.Experience with CAD software, particularly Autodesk Inventor.Preferably experienced in customer-facing roles.Advanced analytical skills preferred, including FEA, CFD, and Simulation.Strong mechanical design experience and knowledge of GD&T preferred.Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a focus on technical writing.Demonstrated mechanical aptitude, with experience in automotive, electrical, or hydraulics being beneficial.Strong organizational, project management, and interpersonal skills.Effective time management abilities.Interest in both hands-on work and detailed analysis.Ability to interact effectively with employees at all organizational levels.Demonstrated independent initiative.Ability to work effectively within a team.Open and adaptable to change.
