Associate Director, Behavioral Health, CHA
2 months ago
We believe every person deserves to age well. That's why we're on a path to improve the lives of 40 million older adults by 2030. Come join an awesome team and learn about the work we do, the people we serve, and why equitable aging matters now more than ever. At NCOA, we represent the interests of the aging population across the nation, while striving to live out our core values of equity, excellence, and innovation. This is meaningful work where we put "people first" and our employees can learn and grow, where work/life balance is prioritized, and have a flexible hybrid work schedule while being part of a dynamic, collaborative team.
We are interested in growing our team with passionate, committed, and innovative individuals. The Associate Director, Behavioral Health, CHA will join NCOA at a time of dynamic growth.
POSITION SUMMARY
The NCOA Center for Healthy Aging works to increase access to and use of evidence-based interventions to help older adults and adults with disabilities live longer, healthier lives. The Center houses two National Resource Centers funded by the Administration for Community Living that provide technical assistance and resources to support state and community-based organizations in implementing, scaling, and sustaining evidence-based falls prevention and chronic disease self-management programs so that they will be easily accessible across the U.S. We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Associate Director, Behavioral Health to join our CHA team.
The Associate Director of Behavioral Health works closely with the Director in the development and coordination of programmatic activities within the Center for Healthy Aging. Broadly, the Associate Director serves as a subject matter expert on adult health promotion and disease prevention, including evidence-based programs (EBP) and behavioral health, and oversees the NCOA Annual Virtual Older Adult Mental Health Awareness Day Symposium, with participants. In addition, this position keeps up to date regarding the progress of grantees and other delivery partners across the country, highlights exemplary practices, and provides information, support, and resources to strengthen and expand an integrated, sustainable service system for evidence-based programs.
A core component of the Associate Director's role is to co-lead a best-in class technical assistance (TA) strategy, including business acumen and network development, capacity building, resource development, implementation, and special projects, along with evaluation and dissemination of impact. The Associate Director oversees program committees, review committees and executive committees that provide expert guidance on activities and programming and works collaboratively with the CHA team, other NCOA staff, and external stakeholders, such as the Administration for Community Living/Administration on Aging (ACL/AoA), and other federal agencies, grantees, national organizations, and other national and state level partners. The Associate Director works across diverse audiences of service providers, researchers, community leaders, EBP developers, funders, and the public. Activities center around outreach and training on behavioral health for professionals leading EBPs and technical assistance to grantees, and other community-based organizations (CBOs), resource development, quality assessment and improvement activities, sustainability, and business acumen for the aging network.
Positions at this level typically report to a director and require advanced knowledge and experience as well as some management capabilities. Incumbents are required to make independent judgements within their scope of work and require minimal oversight. Incumbents generally have five or more years of experience in their discipline and a bachelor's degree or the equivalent, as well as substantive experience at this level. Graduate level degrees may be considered in lieu of experience.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Implement strategic efforts related to social and behavioral determinants of health from a programmatic perspective.
- Collaborate with the TA liaisons and the CHA team delivering the day-to-day work of NCOA's two National Resource Centers funded by the Administration for Community Living (ACL) – the National Chronic Disease Self-Management Resource Center and the National Falls Prevention Resource Center.
- Manage a team of project specialists and motivate, support, train, and empower them to fully execute and meet work requirements while optimizing their skills.
- Support the achievement of NCOA's social impact goals for the Resource Centers, as approved by the NCOA Board of Directors, and support the organizational direction and strategic priorities set by the NCOA executive team and Board of Directors.
- Contribute to the technical assistance (TA) effort for CHA staff and co-facilitate regular staff meetings to identify and meet the needs of ACL CDSME and Falls Prevention grantees in exceeding their grant goals and to enhance CHA staff understanding of the evidence-based program landscape, including best practices, common challenges, and innovative solutions.
- Provide technical assistance, support, and nurturance to state agencies and community organizations offering CDSME, falls prevention, and other evidence-based programs to build capacity toward an expansive, sustainable infrastructure for these programs.
- Support the development and submission of proposals for new or expanding healthy aging and behavioral health initiatives from government entities, private foundations, and corporations.
- Responsible for programming and delivering health education through annual meetings including health programming at Age + Action and the Older Adult Mental Health Awareness Day
- Support for the analysis of national health and state policy; contribute to recommendations for improving patient centered care and support referral and integration with CBOs.
- Present and participate in national and state-based conferences/meetings and other events to share knowledge about behavioral health and healthy aging, evidence-based programming, and the work of NCOA. Communicate learnings through conference presentations, reports, publications, and other venues.
- Conduct clear communication in carrying out responsibilities and work closely with the Center team and other NCOA staff to accomplish goals. Participate in team meetings, contribute to the agenda, and support creative solutions to issues that are discussed. Participate in work plan discussions, performance monitoring reviews, and continuous quality improvement activities to contribute to the success of the team.
- Collaboratively develop reports, such as issue briefs and grant progress reports to meet funding requirements.
- Foster collaboration with a variety of public and private, national, state, and local organizations, as well as corporations. Actively seek widespread engagement of other organizations in program strategies and activities.
- Respond to healthy aging-related media requests, as needed.
- Other responsibilities as required.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS
- Master's degree required, preferably in public health, aging services, social services, gerontology, business, behavioral health or a related field.
- A minimum of five years of relevant experience.
- Strong passion for NCOA's mission; mission-/goal-oriented and results-driven to contribute to NCOA's social impact goals.
- Ability to be an effective ambassador for NCOA, explaining to outsiders NCOA's mission, social impact goals, major programs, and how they can get involved with NCOA.
- Advanced oral and written communications skills, including presentation and negotiation skills.
- Understanding of the health issues affecting older adults, the burden and impact of chronic diseases, and the benefits of prevention and self-management education.
- Demonstrated skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with diverse audiences.
- Respect for differences of race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, ability, and socio-economic circumstance and ability to work with diverse individuals within the organization and the broader community.
