Field Engineering Technician

JOB DESCRIPTION

Wood currently has an exciting opportunity for a Field Engineering Technician. Reporting to the Manager, Distribution Engineering, the successful candidate will travel around North and South Carolina to collect site data, field measurements, and photos of utility poles and equipment. These facilities have maintenance concerns identified and our field technicians are expected to collect the necessary information for our design engineers to execute successful design projects. In general, travel will be limited on most weeks, but overnight stays are occasionally required depending on the workload. Technicians are expected to meet the goals / expectations set on a weekly basis by their leader and communicate their status and progress effectively.

This position is a remote/hybrid position near any of the following locations:
  • North Carolina
    • Asheville
    • Charlotte
    • Greensboro
  • South Carolina
    • Greenville

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Significant walking is required; 95% of this position requires field related work. Candidate will be required to be outside year-round and every week as weather and personal safety permit and could be subject to inspection of poles in the following areas; urban, rural, backyard pole lines, private properties, and Transmission and Distribution Right of Ways.
  • Work locations assigned vary weekly.
  • Candidate may either drive their own personal vehicle with a mileage reimbursement or a rental vehicle paid for by Wood
  • Candidate will receive training with an experienced field engineer prior to working alone. Hours are flexible based on need dates of inspections.
  • Candidate will be responsible for following Wood safety procedures and reporting progress daily.
  • Writing daily field inspection log reports
  • Executing inspections under direction of project leadership.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School diploma minimum requirement
  • Preferred candidate would possess experience within the power distribution field and/or an Associate/Bachelor in engineering (or related STEM Field)
  • Candidates must be able to work in both team and independent environments and to organize work to meet deadlines
  • Must be local to one of the specified areas.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) required
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Willingness to perform both field and office work.
  • Ability to work long days in outdoor environments
  • Ability to utilize cell phone and digital camera
  • Valid Driver's License and clean driving record
The following qualifications are considered an asset
  • Prior experience doing field work and distribution component identification.
  • Knowledge of NESC Standards and Client Standards
  • Experience with GIS applications (Smallworld, GE, Bently)
  • Experience with Structural Analysis Software (SpidaCalc, Pole Foreman, PLS-CADD)
  • Experience in both Canada and United States working for a local Utility company
  • Experience working in a utility or consulting environment and managing multiple projects with competing priorities
