Job Summary (Purpose and Function):

The Advanced Practice Hematology/Oncology Director at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine is to ensure quality of care through consultation, collaboration, continuing education, certification and evaluation.

The Advanced Practice Director of Hematology/Oncology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine has a clinical role and administrative role. May practice in the following clinical settings: UMHC/Sylvester or University of Miami Hospital in both the Inpatient and outpatient settings. The Director of Advanced Practice Professionals develops and leads an advanced practice operational and strategic infrastructure in alignment with UHealth system goals. This role ensures the delivery of high quality and cost effective care, based upon competency and evidenced based clinical practice and research. The Director demonstrates the ability to lead individuals/teams across disciplines and possesses an ability to work with all levels of staff within a multidisciplinary group. He/she provides expertise on Advance Practice regulations and oversees the credentialing and privileging process for advanced practice providers in collaboration with Provider Credentialing. Additionally, he/she maintains expertise in clinical competency by involvement with inpatient or outpatient clinical care. Serves as an internal and external expert consultant in Advanced Practitioner clinical practice. Serves on department and enterprise clinical practice administrative and improvement committees. Leads practice based learning and improvement initiatives. Expert comprehension of advanced practice contributions to institution-wide initiatives on both the medical group and health system level. Serves as a main point of contact for senior leaders across the health system. Supports and often leads in the development, pursuit and achievement of strategic and organizational goals. Acts as an ongoing resource for clinical and process issues. Serves as a member of administrative and clinical committees, as appropriate. Provides support to department leadership in establishing practice protocols. Develops processes to collect, verify, and evaluate data relevant to professional performance. Provides overview for current competencies and compliance. Oversees implementation of departmental-based performance improvement for ongoing professional practice evaluation

The primary duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

Accountabilities :

I. Clinical

  • Assesses the physical and psychosocial status of clients by means of interview, health history, physical examination, and diagnostic studies.
  • Recognizes deviations from normal in the physical assessment. Works in collaboration with a physician in formulating treatment plans for health problems and follow-up.
  • Writes prescriptions for medication, blood products based upon laboratory results, routine diagnostic and follow-up studies, therapeutic measures, and post-discharge care in accordance with written practice protocols.
  • Requests written consultation from physicians and other healthcare professionals to ensure appropriate and quality patient care.
  • Assess and follow consult patients when required and independently of physician when needed.
  • Interprets and evaluates findings of studies/tests and intervenes accordingly.
  • Advises collaborating physician of appropriate information regarding patient care and reports to the physician the actions provided to the patients.
  • Evaluates the quality of care provided and recommends changes for improvement.
  • Initiates appropriate actions to facilitate the implementation of therapeutic plans that are consistent with the continuing healthcare needs of the clients.
  • Answers patient-related inquiries via telephone, Uchart In-basket , etc.
  • Assists in the management of family dynamics and coping mechanisms during acute and chronic phases of patient care.
  • Conducts or participates in multidisciplinary rounds and ensures appropriate and quality care for patients.
  • Performs patient triage and determines the urgency of physician's evaluation.
  • Provides symptom management for side effects related to oncologic treatment.
  • Assist with Peer to Peer authorizations and filling out medical forms for patients.
  • Ensure that office runs smoothly and efficiently and correspond with referring physicians and patients to provide good care for patients.
  • Communicates daily with triage nurse regarding patients who need to be added to NP clinic for symptom management, evaluation, and treatment.

II. Research

  • CITI certification within three months of employment
  • Facilitates clinical research protocols and coordinates patient care with research staff.

III. Leadership

  • Management oversight of the APPs (Physician Assistants, Advanced Practice Registered Nurses) practice located in inpatient and outpatient setting located at the following locations: UHealth Tower, Jackson Memorial Hospital, the Lennar Foundation Medical Center, SCCC Miami, SCCC Deerfield Beach, SCCC Kendall, SCCC Plantation, SCCC Hollywood, SCCC Fort Lauderdale, SCCC Deerfield Beach, and SCCC Doral.
  • Collaborate with Senior Leaders to set the strategy and establish standards for the hiring, credentialing, privileging, performance appraisal/competency assessment, and clinical practice of APPs.
  • Establish job expectations, performance standards, and methods for measurement of standards for APPs.
  • Coordinate with Human Resources and physician, nursing, and administrative leadership in the development and implementation of policies and procedures that apply to APP staff.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop staff through innovative mechanisms (e.g., peer reviews) designed to improve performance.
  • Maintain awareness of team engagement; identify and respond to key challenges and areas of opportunity
  • In collaboration with senior leadership, explore, recommend, develop, and implement new opportunities to optimize clinical care and enable better utilization of APPs to drive UHealth growth and expansion.
  • Direct and prioritize resource allocation to ensure that service needs are met, while maintaining UHealth's quality standards.
  • Oversee the overall operation of the APP practice, ensuring appropriate and efficient provision of services to meet clinical-programs and UHealth goals and objectives.
  • Oversee APP billing practices and ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements.
  • Foster an engaged and learning environment by promoting APP participation in continuing education programs (e.g., CME/CEU).
  • Support academic-degree achievement to enhance professional knowledge and clinical practice.
  • Develop and oversee a comprehensive orientation/onboarding program for APPs.
  • Support APP engagement in research.

  • Board certification

  • Minimum of five years of Hematology/Oncology experience
  • Minimum of five years in a leadership role
  • AOCNP
