Job summary: Business Team Leader

The Business Team's mission is to produce coverage that reflects Minnesota's place as a national leader in business and innovation. We are looking for an editor who can drive ambitious, sophisticated and creative coverage of one of the largest health and biotech hubs in the world, which includes national and international players such as UnitedHealth Group, the Mayo Clinic, Medtronic and a thriving start-up community pushing the frontiers of medicine and technology.

You will succeed in this role by helping your reporters break news and produce a compelling mix of accountability reporting, smart beat enterprise and human-centered narrative that highlights the companies, people, ideas and trends propelling our regional economy.

You will:

  • Be enterprising and entrepreneurial. Our readers most value news and insightful reporting not seen elsewhere.
  • Be relentlessly audience-centric. You will ensure that reporters and others on your team are adhering to best practices around analytics, search and discovery; and developing and implementing data- and audience-informed coverage plans for their topic areas.
  • Collaborate with the Business Editor and other news leaders to determine daily, weekly and ongoing coverage strategies across multiple platforms.
  • Collaborate closely with the Star Tribune's Audience, Product, Consumer Growth and Revenue teams to ensure our journalism reaches its widest audience.
  • Engage with our audience and subscribers at forums and other events, articulating how the Star Tribune lives its journalistic mission and values.
  • Demonstrate leadership skills that emphasize respectful inclusion while driving for excellence.
  • Effectively recruit, hire and train for a broad range of skillsets.
  • Lead and deliver transformational edits as needed on major initiatives.
  • Enforce deadlines on stories from the quick turn to the long-range.
  • Work regularly from the Star Tribune's downtown headquarters.

Qualifications:

  • Sharp editorial judgment and the ability to work with reporters who have a wide range of experience on the beat - serving as a coach, manager and guide in a constantly changing news environment.
  • A portfolio of work - as an editor or a reporter - that demonstrates an ability to quickly make complex topics understandable.
  • A commitment to using 21st century digital tools, tracking and analyzing online audience trends and building strategies to engage readers.
  • Supervisory skills that foster a creative and supportive culture.
  • Communication and collaboration skills to work across a matrixed organization.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments, track budgets and multitask in a high-pressure environment.
  • A bachelor's degree in journalism or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experience.

Pay for this position starts at $89,300 a year, based on the H-scale level in the contract of the Minnesota Newspaper and Communications Guild.
