Job Summary

The Student Success Counselor for Exploratory Advising assists students in their academic pursuits by providing guidance in course selection, degree planning, broader educational goals, and graduation requirements. Student Success Counselors work with students to develop program plans of study that align with degree requirements and career aspirations. Assists students through their college transition and academic milestones. Through data analytics, Student Success Counselors monitor student progress to identify potential pitfalls, recommends university-wide resources, and helps find solutions and /or interventions to physical or psychological difficulties associated with learning.

Student Success Counselors assist in university goals and priorities in the areas of retention and timely student progress, as well as continual efforts toward student goal achievement and improved academic planning skills.

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:
  • Participates in training and professional development activities necessary to increase knowledge and skills required of Student Success Counselors, such as the administration and interpretation of interest and assessment tools, micro-credentialing, and skill assessment for digital badges. Assists experienced Student Success Counselors in these activities for experiential learning.
  • Contributes to persistence and retention by regular monitoring of student progress utilizing a case management model. Intervenes, advocates, and recommends resources and solutions to alleviate barriers to success. Collaborates with other university resources, such as Career Services, Counseling and Psychological Services, The Center for Academic Achievement, Financial Aid, or Adaptive Services, to provide holistic support.
  • Facilitates four-year graduation rates by providing individual and group guidance related to academic programs, goals, and curriculum. Collaborates with students to develop educational plans that support career goals and ensure a proper pathway to graduation.
  • Responsive to invention efforts designed to improve retention and persistence by proactively encouraging students to register for classes in a timely manner.
  • Aids four-year graduation goals by reviewing records for student caseload and conducting regular degree progression audits to ensure students are tracking to meet goals. Identifies at risk students and conducts direct outreach to develop an intervention strategy.
  • Supports student career development by serving as a resource for experiential learning opportunities. Helps students find appropriate co-curricular activities that provide opportunities for leadership, scholarly activity, civic engagement, service learning, and wellness.
  • Provides direct leadership for the development and tracking of financial aid and scholarship strategies through the use of university-wide dashboards; including but not limited to providing guidance and application of such strategies to directly impact the university's goals and performance metrics.
  • Participates in recruitment and outreach initiatives led by Enrollment Management and Student Engagement, such as Eagle Expo, Say Yes to the Nest, and Weeks of Welcome, to provide information to prospective students, admitted students, and parents.
  • Maintains accurate records of counseling appointments and outreach efforts that are entered into the student degree tracking system.
  • Assists with administrative tasks such as transient application requests, course evaluation, course articulations, or course substitutions as needed.

Required Qualifications:
  • This position requires either seven years of directly related full-time experience or, as an alternative, a Master's degree from an accredited institution in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, Psychology, or closely related field and one year of full-time experience directly
  • Professional full-time experience in higher education student services.
  • Experience operating a personal computer and proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Three years professional full-time experience in retention-focused academic advising or counseling in higher education
  • Experience administering and interpreting major and career assessment tools (e.g. Self-Directed Search, MyPlan, Discover, etc.).
  • Experience administering and interpreting degree planning / degree audit tools and other advising tools (e.g. Degree Works, Workday Student, Salesforce, Starfish, etc.)
  • Experience using and interpreting data analytics tools and dashboards (e.g. Tableau, etc.)
  • Experience in student financial aid and enrollment services processes and practices.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of theoretical models of college student development and students in transition.
  • Knowledge of advising and career development theory and models of developmental advising/counseling.
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations of higher education within the state of Florida.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use job-related technology such as Microsoft Office, Workday Student, Degree Works, Appointment Manager, and Florida Shines.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Strong active listening skills.
  • Ability to work successfully as both a member of a team and independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with a diverse group of staff, faculty, students, and the community in a service-oriented environment.
  • Ability to use effective decision making and conflict resolution techniques.

Salary Range: $45,000 to $47,000
