The Citrus Pest and Disease Prevention Division is recruiting to fill one (1) Environmental Scientist position in the Riverside Office in Riverside County.

Under the supervision of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory SES), the Environmental Scientist performs a range of duties involving environmental analysis, outreach, logistics, and writing reports for agricultural programs for the Citrus Division.

This involves interaction with federal, state, and county agencies as well as other cooperators and interested or affected groups.

This position is located in Riverside, CA.

These duties include but are not limited to:

  • Develop quarantine regulatory measures for the state, county, local agencies, and stakeholders. Assist with creating quarantine documents. Implement environmental standards and regulations to ensure the state's agricultural lands and natural resources remain free from citrus pests and diseases. This includes applying scientific methods and principles in the identification, research, and resolving of problems in the areas of emergency pest abatement and control measures to contain the infestation.
  • Enforce state interior quarantines and federal domestic quarantine measures for invasive pests that could adversely impact the state's natural resources.
  • Ensure establishments follow compliance agreements and regulatory requirements, including witnessing nursery treatments, reviewing treatment data from nurseries, requesting and reviewing monthly nursery self-certification spreadsheets, and ensuring nurseries are using the correct permits.
  • Evaluate data from quarantine activities on the effects of regulatory measures on vegetation, wildlife, land, water supplies, and other aspects of the environment. Apply data to assist in the development of solutions to problems found to protect the state's natural resources and agricultural industry from any negative effects that may arise with the enforcement of quarantine regulatory activities aimed at to contain and/or to prevent the spread of citrus pests and diseases.
  • Perform a broad range of research and assessment activities statewide (in urban, rural, and agricultural terrain) concerning present and future environmental, environmental health, and natural resource management issues related to protecting the States citrus industry, natural resources, and public health from citrus pests and diseases.
  • Travel to various locations while operating a state vehicle safely and responsibly to conduct pest detection programs and detection surveys for regional or statewide Citrus Division to ensure that the states agriculture and natural resources remain free of citrus pests and diseases.
  • Evaluate integrated pest management principles to determine the best eradication strategies to include impacts on human health, the environment, and beneficial organisms.
  • Coordinate with regulatory agencies in developing and implementing environmental monitoring methodologies for various eradication projects.
