Devens, Massachusetts, United States Commonwealth Fusion Systems Full time

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.

CFS collaborates with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with groundbreaking new high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. Our mission is to deploy these power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. To that end, CFS has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. Supported by the world's leading investors, CFS is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate change. To implement this plan, we are looking to add dedicated people to the team who treat people well, improve our work by adding multifaceted perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have achieved outstanding results through a range of pursuits, and have skills and experience related to this role.

SPARC Diagnostic Systems Engineers focus on the implementation of CFS Systems Engineering process and systems thinking to the plasma diagnostics that will be used in the real-time control of SPARC, optimize its day-to-day operation and be used to investigate burning plasma physics to inform the design of ARC. This role is inherently cross-disciplinary, and requires collaboration with a wide variety of stakeholders, both inside CFS and with science teams around the world, to ensure that systems are designed, integrated, and operated successfully.

The SPARC Diagnostics Team has a wide variety of backgrounds and includes collaborations with fusion community teams around the world. This role is expected to work with the Responsible Officers and Engineers as the matrixed Systems Engineer to find the most effective and added value approaches to delivering SPARC relevant work products, processes, and toolsets while remaining cognizant and respectful of relevant decision authorities and their associated scope.

While this role will spend a portion of its time supporting final design reviews of plasma diagnostics, it is also expected that this Systems Engineer will be a cross-functional facilitator, developing and implementing stakeholder aligned solutions as we complete late-stage design, fabrication, and assembly. While this role focuses on a number of fusion-specific technologies, we welcome and encourage applicants from all technical backgrounds to join our diverse team.

This team member will:

  • Work within the bounds of and with respect to the appropriate decision authorities, conduct the following design & integration focused scope:
  • ● Support the coordination of the design efforts outside of the cryostat owned by multiple System Responsible Officers (SRO) and Responsible Engineers (RE) to ensure consistency in approach and to avoid integration issues in shared spaces outside of the tokamak core structure
  • ● Facilitate the design integration of on/in-tokamak systems that are owned by Tokamak Interfacing Systems Responsible Engineers
  • ● Identify and support the addressing of cross-functional issues, tool development, and coordinate at the Ex-Vessel Integrated Product Team (IPT) meeting
  • ● Maintain the interface between the Tokamak CAD software (NX) and the plant CAD software (AVEVA) via workflows and tracking tools
  • Work with relevant Diagnostic SROs and REs, conduct the following subsystem focused scope:
  • ● Coordinate, define, and control plasma diagnostic system interfaces with other tokamak and plant systems
  • ● Support the coordination of the design and execution of the "final mile" of plant side systems to connect to plasma diagnostic systems in the tokamak and diagnostic halls
  • ● Conduct impact assessments for and support the management of changes affecting technical baseline of the plasma diagnostics for impacts to scope, schedule, cost, performance, or interfacing systems
  • ● Support design review content development and the review of other design reviews for technical maturity, consistency, and accuracy
  • ● Conduct safety focused risk assessments on plasma diagnostic subsystems using failure modes analysis software and methods, and ensuring that risk mitigation plans are developed and implemented
  • Where applicable, develop standard design guidance to facilitate a consistent approach for SPARC systems development

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, Physics, or a related field
  • 4+ years of experience in Systems Engineering or related roles with a Bachelor's Degree, or 2+ years of experience with a Master's Degree
  • Thorough understanding of and proficiency in Systems Engineering life cycle processes and how they are realistically implemented on fast paced projects
  • Experience working in the development of large, integrated and complex systems, energy, aerospace, defense, transportation, etc.
  • General knowledge of mechanical, electrical, I&C, and industrial concepts with the ability to learn and apply new technical concepts
  • Strong interpersonal and technical communication skills, with the ability to proactively engage and communicate with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Experience working in an environment where creative, proactive problem solving is required with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Experience working in a Teamcenter / NX (or related PLM solutions) based environment to manage integrated design solutions

Additional experience and/or qualifications:

  • General knowledge in any of the following areas: high and ultra-high vacuum, materials science, electrical insulation design for high voltage applications, thermo-structural analysis techniques
  • Model Based Systems Engineering experience, specifically utilizing SysML based tools
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to perform activities such as stooping, climbing, typing, standing, and sitting for extended periods of time
  • Work in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics
  • Willing to occasionally travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call
  • #LI-Hybrid

CFS team members thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and have demonstrated exceptional results through a range of different pursuits. We all tightly align with our company values of integrity, execution, impact and self-critique. As we grow, we are looking to add talented people who are mission driven and bring diverse perspectives and new ways of solving problems.

At CFS, we deeply value diversity and are an equal opportunity employer by choice. We consider all qualified applicants equally for employment.
