General Function:

This position has responsibility to assist direct reports regarding the complete design and development of containers (i.e. aluminum cans, bottles, shaped and aerosol cans), their corresponding metal-forming tooling and support R&D activities. Experience in can making industry, especially the D&I process for aluminum 2-piece cans or related fields, research, product development, physical testing, test data analysis, detailed design and analysis, bill of material creation and management, engineering change orders initiation and completion, creation and distribution of technical report, creation and issuance of detailed engineering drawings, is strongly preferred in this role. The selected candidate must be available to travel domestically and internationally.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Maintain an effective working knowledge and awareness of Belvac's current documented Quality Management System as it pertains to their job assignments.
  • Ensure that the R&D lab works to appropriate ANSI standards and maintains documentation in accordance with ISO 9001 requirements.
  • Supervise and coordinate the activities of the tooling engineers that design and develop aluminum containers and their corresponding metal-forming tooling (i.e. Cupper, Bodymaker, Necker, Internal Base Reformer, Flanger, Bottle Can Machine System - BCMS).
  • Provide guidance to direct reports regarding creation of tooling drawings and machine setups layouts for metal-forming processes.
  • Review modeling and virtual simulation methods that solve technical problems related to metal containers performance.
  • Support direct reports with statistical analysis techniques to trial data, develop key observations and conclusions and elaboration-submission of corresponding technical reports.
  • Supervise document changes to engineering records and specification documents in accordance with ISO requirements.
  • Provide Sales department quotations for Container Engineering Services (i.e. Internal Base Reforming tests) and assist the Technical Service department with installation/commissioning of new machinery and tooling setup for metal-forming processes at customer plants.
  • Value Engineering of designs to achieve cost targets while maintaining/improving function.
  • Support Purchasing and Production Control by addressing inquiries related to tooling design related items.
  • Support the development and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures for New Container & Tooling Development and Testing, including the use of statistical tools for analyzing testing results and designing experiments.
  • Develop and drive the maintenance of appropriate standard project and product documentation like risk assessments, technical reports and other required engineering documentation.
  • Assist in the continuous process improvement of Belvac's product line.
  • Work on special engineering projects assigned by the Department Manager.
  • Other duties as required and defined by the reporting manager.

Education:

Master's Degree; BS in Mechanical Engineering.

Skill and Experience:

Required

  • FEA simulation – Abaqus (three years minimum).
  • Design mechanical components/fixtures using CAD software (five years minimum).
  • Experience in statistical analysis and technical reporting (three years minimum).
  • Computational fluid dynamics modeling (two years minimum).
  • Aluminum can metal-forming tooling design (three years minimum)
  • Work well under demanding timelines and pressure situations to meet customer requirements.
  • Familiar with shop fabrication methods and techniques and understanding of OSHA safety standards.
  • Working knowledge of industry design drafting standards such as ANSI Y or later).
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and establish priorities.
  • Good hands-on skills.
  • Expert knowledge of MS Office Suite computer skills.
  • Solid communication skills, both written and verbal.

Desired

  • Experience in the use of Quality and Engineering Tools like FMEA, Root Cause Analysis and Statistical Process Control, among others.
  • Familiar with operating common machine shop tools such as lathe, mill, band saw, etc., experience in CNC machining and programing is a strong plus.
  • Ability to develop high quality and concise technical reports.
