We are in a moment where the next chapter of the Broad Institute will be shaped. A crucial piece to this next phase of the Broad is the Controller - the person who will handle a wide variety of sophisticated accounting, compliance, audit and tax responsibilities for multiple entities. As Controller, you will demonstrate technical aptitude, managerial experience and the ability to think strategically regarding policies, procedures and systems. A key part of your role will be to have significant interaction and build relationships with senior leadership in a dynamic and entrepreneurial environment.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Train, develop and lead a team of professionals responsible for general accounting, reporting, tax, treasury operations and commercial banking, payroll, who manage the financial operations. Manage matrixed reporting for accounts payable and billing & collections, with a strong focus on ensuring cross team collaboration.
  • Oversee the external financial statement and ERISA audit. Partner with the Office of Sponsored Research to complete the Uniform Guidance Single Audit audit.
  • Prepare audit materials and present to the Institute's Audit, Risk and Compliance Committee of the Board of Directors.
  • Oversee and prepare financial and tax reporting for parent organization and supporting organization, including monthly and year-end financial statements, various Board materials, annual Form 990, 990-T, MA PC and other state tax returns.
  • Manage Treasury operations and reporting including management of daily cash and cash equivalent balances, wire transfers, federal cash drawdowns, debt management and compliance, endowment and other investment reporting.
  • Lead the debt-asset strategy, including monitoring/projecting key metrics used by rating agencies in evaluating Broad's creditworthiness and leading discussions with agencies (S&P and Moody's) for purposes of facilitating annual rating reviews and/or capital market transactions.
  • Foster relationships through collaborating with the appropriate senior leadership, including CFO and Directors of various finance functions.
  • Initiate transactions with external investment managers, and other general treasury administration.
  • Collaborate with the Offices of Development, Sponsored Research and Strategic Alliance & Partnering to oversee Gift and Pledge, Post-award Grant, and IP accounting and reporting.
  • Partner with the Financial Planning and Analysis team on various matters, including reporting of cash reserves and internal funds.
  • Work closely with Business Systems to ensure the ERP and other systems used by the department are being used as effectively and efficient as possible. Identify opportunities for continuous improvement of key business processes and evaluate and adopt industry best practices, leveraging technology to support them.
  • Ensure all accounting functions and reporting are conducted in accordance with GAAP, Uniform Guidance, and internal policies and procedures.
  • Interpret accounting guidance and its impact on the organization Identify opportunities for process improvement Serve as a member of the Institute's ERISA Committee.
Minimum Requirements:
  • At least 10 years of progressive Accounting/Financial experience from a complex environment, specifically in the not-for-profit industry
  • CPA required (Internal Broad finance experience may be considered in lieu of)
  • Proven managerial skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to superior customer service
  • Strong attention to detail and follow-through
  • Must be available to work a hybrid schedule which includes at least 3 days per week onsite at our 105 Broadway location
Work Environment: This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment including computer and copier/printer.
Physical Demands This is largely a sedentary role. The person in this position frequently communicates with colleagues across administration. Must be able to exchange accurate information via speaking and in written form in these situations.
