Position Summary and Responsibilities


The Director ensures that the library fulfills the college's educational mission by collecting materials that support the curricular goals of the academic program and that serve the needs of the faculty, students, and other constituents.

The Director will lead and further develop the library as an effective resource for teaching, learning, and research related to creating contemporary art and its critical discussion.

In addition to managing the library staff, resources, services, and daily operations, the Director must communicate effectively with students and faculty and represent the Joanne Waxman Library (JWL) within the greater Portland community.

This senior-level position reports directly to the Dean of Undergraduate Studies.

  • Oversight of the library, including short and longrange plans that consider budget, staffing, collection development, facilities, technology, storage planning, and equipment; sets goals and strategic priorities in line with those of the college
  • Develops the library's collections (print, media, periodic, special, and reference) according to approved library standards and in consultation with faculty, students, staff, and other library professionals to support the curriculum and provide the most effective access to the library's patron groups and users
  • Determines library operational policies and procedures following College initiatives and in keeping with accepted library practices
  • Recruits, trains, and supervises library staff
  • Promotes the library through outreach and special events; assists the Admissions Department in the recruitment of new students by hosting special events for prospective students
  • Keeps current in library science through membership in professional associations and groups, reading professional literature, and participating in local, regional, and national conferences and meetings
  • Acts as liaison with local, regional, national, and international professional organizations, such as GPACU (Greater Portland Alliance of Colleges and Universities), AICAD (Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design), and ARLIS/NA (Art Libraries Society of North America); represents Maine College of Art in the MINERVA consortium
  • Teaches the use of library resources and research methods, both on an asneeded, individualized basis as well in scheduled sessions, for both studio and academic classes; provides reference assistance and research consultations to both individuals and classes
  • Oversees Writing and Tutoring Center
  • Perform circulation desk duties alongside other staff members as needed
  • Participates in various College committees
Qualifications

  • ALAaccredited Master of Library Science degree required
Experience

  • Progressively levels of responsibility in a professional library environment preferred
  • Supervisory experience preferred
  • Experience in Higher Education preferred
  • History of coordinating people, facilities, and budgets preferred
  • Understanding of a Learning Management System, preferably Canvas preferred
  • Offering library instruction to students and faculty and providing reference and writing support is preferred
Skills and Abilities

  • Relevant knowledge of Sierra software, Google Suites, Minerva, Worldcat, Jenzabr, and Open Athens is helpful
  • Effective interdisciplinary collaboration across an institution is preferred
  • Ability to lead and manage change preferred
  • Ability to work in a diverse environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including teambuilding preferred
