The Section of Clinical Sciences (SCS) in the Division of Rheumatology, Inflammation and Immunity is seeking a post-doctoral fellow for a TWO YEAR position to conduct clinical, translational and population epidemiologic analyses in systemic lupus erythematosus and related autoimmune rheumatic diseases. The candidate should possess either a PhD (or equivalent degree) or an MD with a Master's degree, in epidemiology, biostatistics or bioinformatics, and have excellent programming and biostatistical skills.

The candidate will work closely with the principal investigator, biostatisticians, and rheumatology research fellows, research assistants and others in the SCS to provide advanced study design and analysis support and statistical programming for a variety of clinical and epidemiological research projects, including several large cohorts and databases. Opportunities for involvement in multiple studies on autoimmune rheumatic diseases, involving genomics, other 'omics, and biomarkers, as well as environmental exposures and risk prediction modeling. Responsibilities include developing and managing databases, preparing data for analyses, developing study protocols and performing statistical analyses, preparing tables for reports, writing manuscripts with the background, study design and statistical methods and results sections, while working with the principal investigator and junior investigators and attending research group meetings. The post-doctoral fellow will be responsible for performing statistical analyses, writing programs using SAS and R. The SCS has research space in the Hale Building for Transformative Medicine, which provides a collaborative environment and state-of-the-art workspace. Programmers, biostatisticians, fellows and faculty members have office space together, facilitating formal and informal interaction. The post-doctoral fellow will work alongside other programmers and biostatisticians in the SCS, allowing for regular exchange of information and career development opportunities. Our Division is prolific and collaborative, and the post-doctoral fellow will be expected to actively participate in the development of projects and analyses and serve as an author/co-author, potentially for multiple publications. The SCS provides weekly educational seminars and all members are encouraged to attend.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Indicate key areas of responsibility, major job duties, special projects and key objectives for this position. These items should be evaluated throughout the year and included in the written annual evaluation.

  1. Writes SAS, and SQL programs to clean databases and create analysis SAS files. Converts databases into SAS datasets to implement statistical analyses.
  2. Writes SAS and R programs to generate descriptive and advanced analytic statistics and produce reports and tables. Writes SAS programs to perform statistical analyses of data, working closely with statisticians and project PI.
  3. Guides the data analysis plans, writes and runs sophisticated data analysis programs, returns and discusses results with investigators.
  4. Prepares results tables for analyses, reports, manuscripts, grants and presentations.
  5. Drafts research manuscripts of study results and works with co-authors in manuscript publication.
  6. Works with and communicates with investigators to meet their requests in a timely manner. Assists in project planning and attends team meetings and conferences.

Experience with programming using SAS and R. Proficiency with SQL is preferred as well.

Doctoral degree in epidemiology, biostatistics or bioinformatics; or medical doctoral degree with Master's degree in one of these and past programming experience. Previous experience in study design, programming, teaching, data management and research is preferred.

SKILLS

  1. SAS and R programming proficiency is required. SQL experience is also desired but not required. Data management skills, including the creation, modification and merging of computerized data bases in a variety of studies is required.
  2. Knowledge of computerized data entry programs such as MS Access.
  3. Knowledge of medical and analytical terminology.
  4. Knowledge of clinical epidemiology and biostatistics.
  5. Strong interpersonal skills are required for interacting with study personnel.
  6. Proven ability to work independently with little supervision.
  7. Strong organizational skills.
