Job Summary
Reporting to the Executive Deputy Director for the Temple University Department of Public Safety (TUDPS), the Captain of Community Engagement and Security Operations leads the department's Engagement unit, whose key objectives include building relationships with the Temple University community (faculty, staff, students and student organizations), community groups, leaders, and residents in order to facilitate communication, collaboration, and the achievement of common goals. The Captain also oversees the department's security staff, made up of TUDPS security officers (SO), as well as contracted security personnel, and leads the planning, staffing, and execution of security for events large and small.

The Captain formulates the unit's strategies and objectives based on the department's overall goals and incorporates data on university and community trends and campus security issues; plans and implements community events, programming and outreach and oversees the unit's marketing and communication efforts, in coordination with the TUDPS Director of Communications; ensures that security personnel assignments are suitable and that special events are appropriately staffed; and provides recommendations to department leadership regarding community engagement efforts, complex community issues, and campus security operations.

The Captain chairs several advisory groups and stays abreast of best practices within law enforcement, community engagement/outreach, and security staffing, and applies them to their position. The Captain is committed to maintaining the integrity of the department by upholding the highest standards of professionalism.

Required Education and Experience
* Bachelor's Degree in a job-related field
* A minimum of ten years of certified police experience
* A minimum of 7 years providing community engagement services
* An equivalent combination of education, appropriate training, and related experience may be considered
* Current MPOETC certification or certification under the Municipal Police Officer's Training Act (Act 120)

Required Skills and Abilities
* Ability to handle sensitive matters in a confidential and professional manner.
* Must have skills and competencies in public safety and emergency management, including public safety, outreach/engagement, health preparedness, emergency planning, crisis communication, physical plant preparedness, and preparedness training/education.
* Knowledge of marketing and advertising techniques and best practices.
* Knowledge of principles and practices of composing and editing informational and educational material.
* Skilled in critical thinking and problem-solving, as well as being innovative and creative.
* Ability to demonstrate knowledge and familiarity with law enforcement and security principles, in addition to the laws and regulations governing them.
* Requires visual acuity that is sufficient to pass practical yearly firearm qualification course.

NOTE: This is an ON-SITE position. It does NOT support a hybrid work schedule.
