Honolulu, Hawaii, United States Stantec Full time
Many of the world's top engineers and scientists come together in our Water business because they view a community's interaction with water a bit differently-as a single holistic system, rather than unconnected networks divided by jurisdictional boundaries. Working throughout the hydrologic cycle, we are delivering sustainable solutions to make sure water is where it should be and available when needed. Our experts guide our work with scientific rigor, an innovative spirit, and a vision for growth. Every day, we help communities improve, reuse, and protect this precious resource for future generations. By 2025 we're hiring 2,000 people (like you) to join our team. Grow with us, H2O+U.
Your Opportunity
Stantec Water is seeking qualified candidates for a Senior Principal Wastewater Treatment Engineer to join our growing practice in Hawaii. In this consulting engineering role, you will lead talented multi-discipline teams to tackle a complex array of planning, design and construction projects for municipal wastewater systems including process engineering, treatment facilities planning and design, and related infrastructure. You will need to be self-directed, capable of leading and supervising diverse teams, and eager to mentor staff. You should demonstrate an enthusiasm for the water industry and Stantec's water treatment practice. You will participate in all aspects of the project lifecycle - getting to know our clients and their needs, partnering with business development personnel to develop technical proposals, delivering successful projects, and maintaining contact with clients after projects are complete. Although this position will be focused on delivering work in the state of Hawaii, there will be opportunities to work throughout North America.
Your Key Responsibilities
  • Project Technical Leadership: Lead the technical execution of wastewater treatment projects, with an emphasis on treatment process and process mechanical systems. The scope of this execution work will vary by project, but the focus will be on process engineering (SBR, MBR, MBBR, trickling filters and conventional activated sludge process, filtration), promotion of best practices and standards for process design and major process mechanical systems, and QA/QC for design criteria. Promote teamwork and collaboration among disciplines and subconsultants.
  • Project Management and Client Account Management: Maintain and enhance our relationship with clients and industry professionals by providing exceptional service. Help grow key accounts with a focus on water business line technical services, ranging from water and wastewater treatment to conveyance and sustainable water resource management. Interact with clients and develop and manage scope, budget, and schedule on projects. Lead project collaboration among internal team members and clients.
  • Mentoring of Professional Staff: Mentor young professionals who desire guidance on career development objectives and develop collaborative peer mentoring relationships. This mentoring can take any number of forms, including one-on-one guidance, involvement in Stantec initiatives and interest groups, and participation in industry associations.
  • Technical Support for Regional Business Development Activities: Provide technical support to Regional Growth Leaders and Regional Sector Leaders in the identification, positioning and pursuit of strategic clients promoting strategic project opportunities. This technical support includes, but may not be limited to face-to-face client interactions, site visits, technical training for client staff, workshop presentations on treatment technology, planning, regulatory frameworks, etc. This support can take the form of writing technical approaches for proposals, developing slide decks for the technical aspects of competitive interviews, and developing work-breakdown structures for project delivery schemes.
  • Corporate Branding: Engage in active membership in state, regional and national professional associations including Water Environment Federation and others as appropriate. This engagement entails the delivery of papers, presentations, workshops and webinars at conferences and symposia, participation in technical training workshops and seminars, and involvement in committee leadership as appropriate.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Technical experience to include the following:
    • Technical leadership on wastewater projects,
    • Wastewater treatment: primary, secondary, tertiary and biosolids processes,
    • Advanced wastewater treatment processes including membrane filtration and membrane bioreactors, side stream nutrient removal, and emerging technologies as applicable,
    • Wastewater treatment plant facility, and/or wastewater collection system master planning,
    • Wastewater process modeling using BioWin or other modeling platforms,
    • Odor control and residuals handling processes, and
    • Industrial wastewater treatment.
  • Interact with clients, local and remote Stantec staff, permitting agencies and other consulting firms in the execution of engineering projects.
  • Gather information, develop, and evaluate alternatives, and prepare engineering reports.
  • Perform engineering analyses, modeling, and calculations and prepare detailed design drawings and specifications.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Advance level of proficiency with applications of commercial computer wastewater process simulation software packages including, but not limited to, BioWin and/or GPS-X
  • Experience with design of water and wastewater infrastructure
  • Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication including public speaking experience.
  • Strong interpersonal abilities for working in diverse team environments with staff, clients, and stakeholders.
  • Strong project management and/or design management skills.
  • Must have a good driving record and valid driver's license.
Education and Experience
  • BS degree in civil, environmental, or chemical engineering. MS in related fields preferred.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience.
  • Valid Hawaii Professional Engineering license or ability to obtain through reciprocity within 6 months required.
Typical office environment working with computers and working at a desk for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
