Responsibilities

The Nuclear Engineering group at PNNL is looking for a Mechanical/Nuclear Engineer Post Masters Research Assistant (PMRA) specializing in nuclear and space technologies. The ideal candidate, with expertise in Mechanical and Nuclear engineering, will support research in aerospace applications and the aerospace engineering industry. Desired qualifications include experience in nuclear reactor analyses, space-related security and safety aspects, and spacecraft/satellite research and operations certification. The PMRA will work within the Nuclear, Chemical and Biological Division, focusing on neutralizing emerging national security threats. The key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Collaborating with Project Managers and sponsors to analyze technologies, designs, and strategies for countering space-related defense challenges.
  • Providing research support on engineering topics, utilizing analytical thinking and communication skills. Topics include Structural Statics and Dynamics Analyses, Finite Element Methods, Orbital Dynamics, and more.
  • Building and maintaining relationships with project engineers, managers, and stakeholders while working on designs and strategies aligned with project goals.
  • Authoring technical documents, white papers, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ensuring effective communication with project contacts, occasionally traveling to PNNL for onsite interactions.
  • Adhering to the handling of non-sensitive, sensitive, and classified information as needed for research in national security areas.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • Candidates must hold a Master's degree from an accredited college or university obtained within the past 24 months or in the next 8 months.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in mechanical or nuclear engineering with aerospace and nuclear industry experience.
  • Strong communication skills for technical and scientific writing.
  • Ability to provide technical assistance on complex problems based on national policies and industry standards.
  • Knowledge and certification in spacecraft/satellite design and operations.

This role requires obtaining and maintaining a federal security clearance.

DOE regulations bar DOE employees and contractors from affiliations with select foreign governments labeled as high-risk without explicit approval.
