The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the University of Miami invites applicants for a Research Associate II position in Marine Biology and Fisheries.

We seek a research associate to join our group and work part-time as a marine mammal stranding data manager in the Marine Mammal Team of the NOAA Southeast Fisheries Science Center. The incumbent's primary focus will be working with marine mammal stranding network agencies to improve consistency of data collected from stranded marine mammals through training and the management of the Southeast regional stranding database. Primary duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Develop training manuals and provide training to stranding network members on the database
  • Execute data QA/QC procedures for stranding data, develop and adjust QA/QC procedures as needed
  • Prepare reports, perform database queries, create tables and/or figures as needed for research and management requests
  • Manage incoming stranding records
  • Work closely with NOAA staff and database programmers to provide expertise and testing of new database screens during the development of future modules of the Ceto database

Candidates for this position should have (1) a Bachelor's degree in Biology or related field (2) A minimum of 2 years demonstrated experience with database management including setting up queries, (3) experience with marine mammal stranding response and data collection, including familiarity with analytical and pathological results (4) experience with Microsoft ACCESS preferred, (5) experience executing and developing QA/QC procedures, (6) Leadership and project management skills along with the ability and desire to work as part of a collaborative team, (7) excellent communication skills, both oral and written and the ability to communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders, (8) excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, good problem solving and critical thinking skills, and the ability to plan daily duties.

The position will be located at the NOAA Fisheries Southeast Fisheries Science Center Marine Mammal and Turtle Division located in Miami, FL.
