The successful Aircraft Mechanic II perform aircraft maintenance to include inspection, operational test, removal, replacement, repair, and modification of aircraft and/or aircraft systems and components. Apply technical knowledge and experience to solve problems and to troubleshoot and repair aircraft discrepancies. Evaluate work processes performed by crewmembers. Provide technical assistance, guidance, and instruction to employees assigned to crew.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs tasks as assigned /directed by Maintenance Supervisor, Lead Man and/or Crew Leader in accordance with instructions, applicable technical data, manuals, and directives. Works closely with Lead Man, Crew Leader, Maintenance Control, and Foreman keeping them informed of the status of work in progress in areas of responsibility.
  • Work harmoniously with other employees promoting teamwork and cooperation.
  • Ensures that all aircraft parts/components removed from an aircraft are properly documented utilizing computerized operating system or other media identified in applicable departmental maintenance instructions, ensuring repairable, serviceable, or unserviceable parts are properly handled.
  • Evaluates aircraft discrepancies, research aircraft logs books and historical data as required, to identify methods of repair and/or replacement. Identifies necessary parts, materials, and tooling requirements.
  • Able to maintain aircraft engines and related systems, including the induction, cooling, fuel, oil, compression, combustion, turbine, and exhaust systems; conducts engine and related systems inspections. Replaces gaskets, packing, and seals in fuel and oil systems; performs fuel and oil pressure adjustments; adjusts idle mixture and idle speed; removes and installs igniter plugs, sparks plug, starting ignition units, and leads of ignition and starting systems; inspects aircraft fuel systems and fuel samples for contamination; removes, cleans, and replaces fuel and oil filters; performs operational tune-ups of new or overhauled engines installed in aircraft.
  • Able to maintain aircraft hydraulic systems and associated components including the removal/replacement and systems troubleshooting of hydraulic pumps, hydraulic actuators, check valves and accumulators.
  • Adjust, repair, and/or replace electrical wiring systems and aircraft accessories.
  • Installs, removes, and operates jet calibration test units; diagnoses defects in fuel and oil systems; rigs and adjusts power controls, fuel selectors, and shutoff valve controls; performs periodic aircraft inspections.
  • Troubleshoots malfunctions in power plant systems; removes and installs bladder and self-sealing fuel cells; inspects installation and evaluates operation of repaired or newly installed power plants and power plant system components.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties servicing aircraft hydraulic, pneumatic, fuel, and oxygen systems, including cleaning screens and filters, corrosion inspection and treatment, proper greasing, and lubrication of aircraft.
  • Able to inspect the work of Artisan's ensuring established standards of workmanship, safety, quality, and production are met. Able to Monitor, evaluate, and validate work in progress and completed task.
  • Performs aircraft inventory, acceptance, and transfer inspections.
  • Utilize manufacturers' maintenance manuals, service instructions, engineering directives, maintenance requirement cards, technical directives, schematics, drawings, blueprints, charts, and other applicable publications to replace, repair, test and modify assigned systems.
  • Comply with and follow established standards of workmanship, safety, quality, and production.
  • Make recommendations to management to improve productivity, increase efficiencies, and/or cut costs.
  • Operates portable firefighting equipment.
  • Required to qualify as a Collateral Duty Inspector.
  • Required to be T-6 Plane Captain certified.
  • Required to be T-6 Engine Turn qualified.
  • Required to be aircraft jacking and hoisting qualified.
  • Required to be Aircraft Tire and Wheel maintenance safety certified.
  • Required to be Aircraft Hydraulic Contamination certified.
  • Required to be Aircraft Propeller dynamic balancing certified.
  • Required to be Egress Seat/Explosive system checkout certified.
  • Provides technical assistance, guidance and instruction as required for training of personnel in the same or lesser grade classifications in area of responsibility.
  • Provides own hand tools as required in T-6 aircraft mechanic required minimum tool list.
  • Comply with all applicable programs, including Safety, Foreign Object Damage (FOD), Hazardous Communications, Corrosion Control, Hydraulic Contamination, Egress Familiarization, and Tool Control.
  • Participates in the proper maintenance and cleanliness of spaces and facilities.
  • Performs the duties and responsibilities of the lesser grade classifications in area of responsibility.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Satisfactory completion of U.S. Armed Forces aircraft mechanic courses and/or F.A.A. Airframe and Powerplant technical school preferred.
  • Must have valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to obtain/maintain any Company/Government licensing, qualification, certifications, or clearance required for the position.
  • FAA A&P License, or eight (8) years organizational aircraft maintenance experience and two (2) years minimum experience on the T-6 aircraft as an aircraft inspector performing removal, replacement, and inspections of aircraft components such as flight controls, engines, engine accessories, propellers, landing gear components and hydraulic actuated components such as hydraulic pumps, actuators, and servos.
  • Must be able to rig engines, primary and secondary flight control systems, and landing gear systems.
  • Must be able to operate engine test equipment and vibration analysis equipment.
  • Must be familiar with aircraft systems, tools, drawings, schematics, and normal safety requirements.
  • Must have experience in the detection, treatment, and prevention of corrosion.
  • Must be able to work all assigned shifts & schedules.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Possess knowledge/expertise in Organizational Aircraft Maintenance.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of applicable technical manuals, service bulletins, maintenance manuals, maintenance forms, and continuous inspection procedures.
  • Possess a basic knowledge of modern aircraft ejection seats and explosive canopies; must be able to read, write, understand, and communicate the English language and to follow verbal and written instruction.
  • Aircraft ground servicing equipment including vehicles, tugs, tractors, servicing carts, aircraft jacks and hoists, test equipment, hand tools, power tools.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Requires sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods of time, requires frequent climbing, bending, stooping, squatting, crawling, crouching, kneeling, lifting, carrying, balancing, and reaching above shoulder level, pushing, or pulling weight up to 50 pounds. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity; must have close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Requires hearing to normal range. Respirator use may be required.

Requires shift work and a diversity of working conditions that range from a standard shop type environment, where there is no physical discomfort, to an environment where inclement weather may subject individual to severe changes in temperature, direct sun, wind, rain, etc. May be required to work in areas where noise hazards are prevalent.

POTENTIAL HAZARDS:

Exposure to high intensity noise levels, extreme changes in temperature, materials identified on Material Safety Data Sheets, working on or around aircraft and machinery.

WORK LOCATION:

Aircraft maintenance shops, hangars, and flight line. Requires travel in support of cross-country rescue and detachments of unknown duration.
