Greater Denver Area, United States Scythe Robotics Full time
Our Mission at Scythe

Humanity has lost touch with nature - we've traded dirt and trees for asphalt, and we rely on loud, polluting, gas-powered machines to care for our limited natural spaces.

Scythe is forging a new future by building intelligent, all-electric machines that unlock a new superpower: the ability to care for the outdoors pollution-free at enormous scale. From today's first steps in landscape maintenance to full-fledged re-terraforming in the future, Scythe is pioneering autonomous machinery that supports the ingenuity of humans, multiplying our power to nurture our planet.

At Scythe, you'll work with a team of world-class experts in everything from computer vision to mechanical engineering, pushing the limits of possibility and growing by overcoming hurdles along the way.

The world needs what we're building—come join us in making it a reality.

Cognition Robot SW Engineer at Scythe

As a Cognition Robot SW Engineer at Scythe, you'll help our robots plan what to do, when to do it, and how to interact with the landscaping operators and Scythe employees who make up the human side of the human-robot team. We're going beyond the "one robot, one field" paradigm. Our vision is for a team of humans and robots to collaborate on big, complicated landscaping jobs, with multiple mowing areas and complex interactions between humans and robots. On the Cognition team, you'll plan and orchestrate this work.

You'll work in concert with teammates from across the company to build a rich understanding of M.52's high-level planning needs and bring those ideas to life. We expect you to be broadly experienced to be able to "see around corners", to thrive in a fast-paced, self-managed engineering environment, and to be a collaborative, low-ego teammate who helps Scythe realize its big mission.

What you'll do at Scythe

  • Build and maintain high-level planning components on the robot
  • Work with existing codebases, refactoring and migrating as needed
  • Design, develop, and validate high-level robot planning algorithms
  • Contribute significantly to the design of the user experience from the workflow side
  • Maintain and expand our on-robot high-level planning framework for flexibility and speed of implementation of new workflows and task definitions
  • Communicate across the organization to define and share M.52's high-level planning capabilities

What you know well

  • Writing, debugging, and deploying code for robots in at least one compiled language; we primarily use Rust, and we're willing for you to learn on the job
  • High-level planning systems for robotics, in one or more of the following:
    • Task planning
    • Optimization (any style)
    • Scheduling
    • Search
  • Communicating about planning algorithms with peers and colleagues at many different levels of technical detail

What you've maybe done

  • Worked with code in Rust, C++, and Python
  • Worked with the ROS ecosystem or other Robotics frameworks
  • Designed and deployed a planning system in a production environment
  • Contributed to technical roadmap development in a software organization
  • Worked on customer-facing mobile robotics applications
  • Built data/analytics dashboards

Why Scythe?

  • Scythe is an early-stage but well-capitalized startup. Have a huge impact alongside an awesome team of experts shipping something the world has never before seen
  • Competitive salary and equity compensation
  • Fully-sponsored medical, vision, and dental insurance, including 75% funded dependent coverage
  • 401(k) retirement plan (non-matching today)
  • Headquarters in beautiful Longmont, CO (near Boulder, CO.) Enjoy the bounties of nature and open spaces close to home with mountain biking, hiking, skiing and more.
  • Satellite offices in Austin, TX and Fort Pierce, FL
  • Flexible paid time-off and remote work to let you do your best work where and when you want
  • Highly collaborative learning culture where personal freedom, growth, and responsibility are valued
  • An opportunity to have an incredible positive impact on the world
