Scope of Position:

The intern will contribute to a research project responsible for exploring new Corning product concepts, performing critical experiments on nano-metal materials to build fundamental understanding of how sintering and deposition conditions affect density, strength, and shrinkage. Activities will focus on early-stage process research, with work involving evaluation of candidate materials and processing conditions to find materials that meet target performance requirements. The person is expected to have broad technical skills and experience as well as strong interpersonal skills to work with interdisciplinary teams of diverse cultural, educational and ethnic backgrounds. In addition, the individual is expected to have good presentation and excellent communication skills.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

• Engage in process R&D work including development of experimental plans, implementation of experiments, sample measurements, data analysis, and communication of results.
• Collaborate with team in developing and transferring fundamental understandings on new Corning process and/or product concepts.

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

• 8:00-5:00 with flexibility as needed.

Education and Experience:

• Current college graduate student in engineering or materials science.
• Engineering and materials background (physics, chemistry, mathematics).
• Basic mechanical design and troubleshooting skills.
• Strong organization and documentation skills to keep track of multiple experiments and related samples.
• Measurement and data analysis skills and ability to correlate data to real-life applications.
• Competent in office productivity software (MS Office).
• Ability to work with people of diverse technical and cultural backgrounds.

Desired Skills:

• Solid background in materials, including metal sintering, ceramic processing, and glass material properties.
• Material characterization skills, including sample preparation and composition analysis.
• Hands-on experimental skills, including previous experience on assembly of precision mechanical and optical components.

Soft Skills:

• Ability to work independently and with cross-functional teams.
• Excellent communication skills (oral & written).

​The range for this position is $1, $3,185.00 biweekly. Starting pay for the successful applicant is prescribed based on geographic location, nature of position, and year in school.
