Job Description

Tennessee State University, located in Nashville, Tennessee, is recruiting a Public Health Director for the public health programs, including the Bachelor of Science in Public Health and Master of Public Health (MPH), and a potential Ph.

D. program.


The Director's responsibilities include development, implementation and management of public health programs; recruitment of students and faculty; mentoring students, budget management, and developing and maintaining strong and positive relationships with professionals in the health care community in Middle Tennessee and beyond.


Other responsibilities include:

  • Manage the day to day administrative affairs of the public health programs (BS, MPH,
Graduate Certificate and the prospective Ph.
D. program). This includes but not limited to
budget management and faculty evaluations in collaboration with Head of Department.

  • Lead all efforts to recruit students, faculty and other staff members into the public health
programs listed above. This includes, but not limited to student orientation, enrollment goal
monitoring, student progression/retention, and promoting program value through
presentations and community relations.

  • Provide professional development and university service: advise students on academic requirements, maintain disciplinary expertise and scholarship, contribute to the university governance structure, participate in commencements, convocations, and other university events, serve on task forces and committees.
  • Builds on successful public health and other initiatives to gain support for new programs or
services.

  • Participate in seeking extramural funding and engage in other spheres of scholarly productivity (publications etc.)

  • Prepare all written reports (Self Studies for Accreditation, Annual Departmental &University Reports etc.)
associated with the graduate and undergraduate CEPH-accredited programs within the department.

  • Curriculum Leadership
  • Lead efforts to conduct regular program reviews to maintain curricular relevance, implement assessments of student learning initiatives and meet industry
accreditation requirements.

  • Initiates and maintains strategic partnerships that support and enhance the long term direction of public health and health promotion and disease prevention.
Minimum Qualifications
This is a 12-month, tenure-track position at the Associate Professor rank. Applicants must possess a terminal degree in Public Health/ Ph.
D/Dr.

PH with a specialty in any of the following concentrations:

Epidemiology, Behavioral Science and Health Education, Environmental Health, Health Policy, Health Promotion and Disease Prevention; Biostatistics, or Health Disparities and cultural competence; or a degree in medicine (MD) or dentistry (DDS) with a master's degree in public health (MPH).

Applicants who hold other Allied Health degrees will be considered.

The candidate should have taught a minimum of five (5) years at the university level.

Successful candidates will also demonstrate strong evidence of academic leadership; graduate teaching experience; a history of scholarly productivity; a proven record of grantsmanship; experience with accreditation; and a commitment to community outreach.

The candidate should have earned 18 credit hours of doctoral preparation in the health field minimally. The candidate should also have experience in collaborative and multidisciplinary teaching and research.
