Position Overview

The School of Architecture has periodic openings for Adjunct Faculty to teach lectures or seminars, design-based courses, and studios or workshops. Courses vary from 3 credit half semester workshops to 6 credit full semester studio courses. In-classroom hours vary from 3 hours per week for a 3-credit lecture, to 12 hours per week for a 6-credit studio.

Instruction in the School of Architecture is carried out each year by full-time tenured and tenure track faculty members. However, as a professional and accredited program and professionally based discipline, we also rely heavily on part-time faculty who are often full-time practitioners and have a proven history of providing quality instruction for one or more courses in their area of expertise per year. Currently, Adjunct faculty are hired to teach approximately one-third of the architecture and design courses offered annually in the school.

Applications are reviewed as openings occur, and individual applicants are invited to interview when their skills or areas of expertise match a need or opening. This posting is designed to establish a pool of instructors across degree programs. Applications will be reviewed when openings occur throughout the academic year/summer.

Appointment Details

This is a term, non-tenured, Academic Professional and Administrative (P&A) position, pay is based on a per course, per credit basis. Appointments are typically arranged semester by semester and employment is contingent upon the course meeting its enrollment target. There are no benefits associated with adjunct teaching positions.

We are seeking adjunct instructors for the Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 semesters.

Responsibilities

Teach course/s, including the development of course/s, syllabi, and other instructional materials.
Create a welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff, and other constituents from diverse backgrounds.
Integrate diversity in curriculum development, teaching, and program design.
Hold weekly office hours.
Consult regularly with the faculty program director.
Participate in a range of academic activities such as curricular meetings, end-of-semester reviews, guest lectures, etc.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications

For instruction within the undergraduate BDA programs, an undergraduate degree or equivalent degree in a related field is required. For the pre-professional B.S. degree, a professional degree or terminal degree is preferred but not required.
For instruction within the graduate professional programs, a professional degree such as a B.Arch., M. Arch, or equivalent degree in the related field is required. In post-professional courses, Ph.D. or non-studio-based courses, a terminal degree, a Ph.D., or equivalent degree in a related field is preferred.
One to three years demonstrated professional and/or teaching expertise is required and 5+ years is preferred in one or more of the following areas: design leadership; digital imaging; architectural representation methods or drawing; history or theory, schematic and design development methods, building design programming, site and urban design methods, contract documents, design, and construction project management, environmental technology, building systems, materials and methods, structures; etc.
Successful candidates are expected to maintain an active external design practice or leadership position within the community.
Attention to cultural diversity in teaching and/or professional practice and the proven ability to support the University's commitment to equity and diversity.
Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
