Position Overview

The Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Minnesota is seeking applications for part-time faculty roles at the Adjunct Assistant Professor level.

Applicants should exhibit a keen interest in education and mentorship, whether in academic settings or professional environments, alongside practical knowledge of modern landscape architecture methodologies.

Particularly, candidates must demonstrate robust qualifications in one or more of the following domains of landscape architecture:

  • Designing urban public spaces and ecological systems
  • Theory and design of integrated urban infrastructure
  • Programming, designing, and constructing site-specific projects
  • Advanced visual representation techniques
  • Landscape analysis processes, including GIS data utilization
  • Earthwork grading and stormwater management

Responsibilities encompass teaching graduate or undergraduate courses, which may include lectures, labs, and studio formats. The majority of classes are scheduled during the day, requiring candidates to be available during regular class hours.

Instructors may cover various landscape architectural topics, such as schematic design, site planning, urban ecological infrastructure, construction technologies, and digital design techniques.

In addition, faculty members are expected to provide guidance to students outside of class and maintain regular office hours.

Appointment Details

This is a part-time position, with the actual percentage of appointment determined by the number of assigned courses and credit load.

Appointments may be at the Adjunct Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level, based on qualifications.

Responsibilities
  • Course instruction, including the development of syllabi, lecture materials, and course readings.
  • Holding regular office hours and advising students on coursework and academic or career aspirations.
  • Supervising graduate student teaching assistants.
  • Collaborating with faculty on learning objectives, deadlines, and schedules.
  • Providing updates to the Department Head regarding course instruction and student progress.
  • Creating a welcoming and professional classroom atmosphere.
  • Identifying opportunities to incorporate diversity into course instruction.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Accredited Professional degree in Landscape Architecture
  • Professional experience and expertise in one or more specified areas
  • Demonstrated professional practice or scholarship in landscape architecture
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to collaborative work across departments and within the community

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Landscape Architecture or an accredited professional degree plus a Master's or PhD in a related field
  • Proven excellence in professional practice, evidenced by award-winning work or national/international recognition
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching and mentorship
  • Attention to cultural diversity in teaching and professional practice, with a proven ability to support the University's commitment to equity and diversity
