Primary Function:

Serve as the school health leader, advisor, and supervisor for School Health Team at the University School of Nashville (USN). This is a full-time position. The USN School Health Director will report directly to the USN Director.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Lead a school health team of part-time and PRN highly experienced nurses and physician.
  • Utilize the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child model that calls for a collaborative approach to learning and health (ASCD & CDC,
  • Foster an inclusive, safe school environment.
  • Serve as the primary school health liaison within the USN community.
  • Be a resource for school health standards, protocols, laws, and guidelines.
  • Work with the health team to adapt/adopt clinical and health services protocols and update regularly.
  • Ensure updated and ongoing school staff and health team training on health and safety related topics (CPR, First Aid, Stop the Bleed, Mental Health First Aid, common chronic conditions, medication administration, etc.)
  • Develop a training plan for unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP) to work in the health room to help with triage, first aid, and medication administration.
  • Foster relationships with community organizations and providers to help coordinate care and services for children and families.
  • Serve as the health expert on IEP team meetings and health education.
  • Provide health services in the health center as needed: triage, first aid, medication administration, etc.
  • Utilize the USN's EMR, Magnus, to improve documentation, communication and data collection.
  • Create and carry out a continuous quality improvement and evaluation plan.
  • Provide an annual health center budget plan to USN director and board; including staff salaries, stock medical supplies, health center space updates, staff training and conferences, staff CE requirements
  • Coordinate infection control efforts.
  • Participate in local, state and national school health organizations, initiatives and education (National/TN Association of School Nurses, American School Health Association/TN School Health Coalition, etc.)
  • *Utilize state and national frameworks to improve health and well-being at USN. * Consistent with USN's mission and holistic approach to learning, the school health program will utilize the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child model that calls for a collaborative approach to learning and health (ASCD & CDC, The National Association of School Nurses Framework for 21st Century School Nursing Practice aligns with this model and Tennessee's Coordinated School Health Program. It provides structure and focus for the key principles and components of current day, evidence-based school nursing practice.

    Qualifications:

    1. Education – BSN (minimum); MSN, MPH or equivalent degree strongly preferred.
    2. Licensure – Licensed as a Registered Nurse in Tennessee; APRN licensure optional
    3. Certification – National certification in school nursing (NCSN) through the National Board for Certification of School Nurses or national certification as a pediatric or family nurse practitioner. The NCSN certification will be required after one year of employment if currently not certified. CPR/BLS certification
    4. Experience – At least 2 years in outpatient pediatrics, school health, public health, or family health
