The Manager, Interpreter Services provides daily oversight and leadership of staff interpreters, agency interpreters, and scheduling and dispatching services, and ensures that the services meet the needs of patients, physicians and the healthcare team. they are responsible for the services provided throughout the Regional Health Ministry, including all ambulatory sites.

The position focuses on developing and improving around-the-clock systems for scheduling and dispatching interpreters, improving the quality of communication assistance provided by interpreters, ensuring cost-effective use of resources, and collecting and utilizing data in program management. Responsible for the screening, hiring, training, and supervision of interpreters.


The Manager of Interpreter Services coordinates requests for the translation of written materials. Ensures that interpreter services areprovided in accordance with the NCIHC interpreter code of ethics and standards of professional conuct, and meet all CMS and IDPH Regulatory Requirements.

Position Responsibilities:

PEOPLE CENTERED CARE:

  • Manages day to day regional operations to ensure that all patients and families receive the translation services they need to participate in care.
  • Develops and produces periodic reports on patient and caregiver satisfaction with interpreter services.

ENGAGED COLLEAGUES:

  • Ensures that regional departments implement daily huddle processes, round on colleagues to identify and resolve issues and conduct regular team meetings to communicate organizational objectives and information.
  • Screens, hires, orients, trains, and evaluates the performance of staff interpreters utilizing the National Standards of Practice (NCIHC).
  • Encourages colleague participation in annual engagement survey and achieve or exceed organizational objectives for this key goal.

OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE:

  • Conducts unit level huddles throughout the region that result in improvement opportunities and deliver year over year increases in the number of opportunities identified and resolved.
  • Screens and dispatches requests for on-site interpreters based on priority of request and appropriateness of delivery mode (on-site vs. telephonic) for need and setting.
  • Increases the number of hours of translation services year over year, with the goal of 100% of critical conversations take place with appropriate interpretations services.
  • Ensures services provided by agency staff are held to the same standard as employed colleagues.

PHYSICIANS and CLINICIANS:

  • Partners with leadership in Ambulatory Settings and within the Medical Staff structure, to ensure clinical staff are aware of regulations regarding interpretation services.
  • Demonstrates a continual increase in interpretation utilization in physician offices and outpatient clinical settings.
  • Provides training for physicians and staff related to language access regulatory requirements; procedures and guidelines for using interpreters; and methods of working effectively with an interpreter.

LEADERSHIP NATIONALLY:

  • Maintains awareness of best practices in the industry and participate in TH groups to share and learn from best practices.
  • Develops annual plan for improvement in services 3 months in advance of budget preparation.

EFFECTIVE STEWARDSHIP:

  • Achieves or exceeds organizational objectives regarding cost management.
  • Manages and monitors the utilization and performance of agency interpreters. Verify and approve invoices for payment.
  • Coordinates the translation of written documents into other languages.
  • Develops and implements policies/procedures for interpreter services that ensure cost-efficiency and enhance productivity and availability of services.
  • Prepares staff assignments and schedules; monitor and approve time and attendance records for payroll.
  • Maintains accurate records of interpreter requests, productivity, work volumes, and statistics.
  • Ensures the accuracy and completeness of staff documentation of interpreter requests, utilization, and patient refusal of interpreter services. Develops and produces periodic reports on program utilization, related costs, and program growth.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree OR equivalent training acquired via work experience.
  • 3-5 years of previous job-related experience.
