A Brief Overview
The Speech Pathologist III (SLP III) is a senior therapist who is fully competent with SLP I and II job duties including video fluoroscopy and flexible endoscopic swallow evaluations, and has extensive expertise and experience in developing, reviewing, and providing evaluation and treatment plans for high complexity patient populations and for a wide variety of ages and diagnoses, utilizing and applying innovative and advanced skills and techniques to solve patient care needs in an accurate and efficient manner. The Speech Pathologist III independently serves as a clinical resource for all units/service lines. The Speech Pathologist III takes a leadership role in multi-disciplinary care team discussions, representing, and recommending the most appropriate treatment plan for the needs of the patient. The Speech Pathologist III serves as a clinical mentor/preceptor to less experienced therapists by reviewing treatment plans and collaborating to develop and implement complex speech pathology care plans that are evidence based. The Speech Pathologist III supervises patient care responsibilities, clinical development, and skill assessment of speech pathology interns, clinical fellows, and new graduates. Leads cross-functional program development and performance improvement initiatives and leads the Rehab Department in clinical process changes/redesign. Acts as a liaison to nursing and ancillary department initiatives. Develops and revises departmental policies and procedures, and other specialized programs. Develops and presents classes and in-service programs that support work of speech pathologists as needed.

What you will do

  • Leads patient care conferences, communicating with and teaching other care providers.
  • Leads Team or Discipline meetings
  • Makes recommendations for the development of departmental policies and procedures; leads new program development, for example by developing treatment protocols for new patient populations.
  • Develops/presents at least 2 professional development activities at least every 2 years from the following choices: CEU-eligible in-service, course, state or national poster or presentation, and/or lectured at university level program
  • Assists in re-evaluating care delivery/programs and completes assignments in the departmental plan to improve services.
  • Participates in research or new program development, for example by developing treatment protocols for new patient populations.
  • Is aligned with and fully supports departmental and organizational principles, goals and objectives
  • Functions as CI for Speech Language Pathology students/fellows as needed
  • Regular participation as Faculty/Mentor/Preceptor in any advanced Training Programs
  • Serves as a primary orientation resource as needed
Education Qualifications
  • Graduate of an approved Speech Language Pathology curriculum with either Masters' or Doctorate degree (required)
Experience Qualifications
  • At least four (5) years clinical practice as a Speech & Language Pathologist in the acute setting and
    o Holds at least one (1) advanced certification OR
    o Has lead Department or Interdisciplinary Program/Initiative or Process Improvement Project OR
    o Presented a continuing ed approved in-service or course, presented at state or national conference, lectured at university level program, or organized SLP/Rehab participation in a hospital event
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge and adherence to Code of Ethics and performance standards specific to the clinician's professional organization
  • Knowledge of available equipment and vendors used in assigned area
  • Knowledge of basic business aspects of position, such as utilization management, charging practices and regulatory practice compliance;
  • Knowledge of evaluation and treatment methodologies as applied to routine patient care
  • Knowledge of legal issues affecting the clinical practice
  • Knowledge of pathologies and injuries which result in physical impairments
  • Knowledge of principles, methods, equipment and theory of the practice of clinical specialty
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, clearly, concisely and effectively with patients, families, co-workers, visitors, supervisors and other health professionals
  • Ability to develop and document clearly and accurately treatment goals that are realistic, measurable, appropriate, functionally based and that include patient/family input
  • Ability to develop, implement and adapt treatment programs
  • Ability to evaluate patients and interpret clinical data and make clinical judgments in clinically complex situations
  • Ability to develop, implement and adapt treatment programs to changing clinical status
  • Ability to provide appropriate care and progress treatment based on professional standards of practice, and on the needs of the specific individual, including age and developmental considerations, cultural and psychosocial issues, precautions and medical condition
