The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has an exciting career opportunity for a Supervisory Research General Engineer. This position is in the Health Effects Laboratory Division (HELD), Physical Effects Research Branch (PERB). The Branch conducts and supports research to develop new knowledge, methods, and devices for better measuring, assessing, and controlling hazardous exposures and health effects.

The Branch is also responsible for the HELD inhalation facility. It provides technical support for developing state-of-the-art exposure systems that mimic occupational exposure to particulates, vapors, or biologics that may adversely affect worker health.

Science at Work for People at Work

We are seeking an experienced engineer or scientist to lead a team in the development of research projects, and examine activities relating to hazardous exposures, productivity, and associated biomechanical, psychophysical, and biological responses. As the Branch Chief, they will develop advanced engineering methods, techniques, and instrumentation for program effectiveness.

The successful applicant should:

Have experience in a research laboratory.

Demonstrate a hands-on approach to field experimental studies.

Demonstrate leadership or supervision competencies.

Duties:

As a Supervisory Research General Engineer duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Providing advice, consultation, and recommendations to management on the need to include the subject matter expertise and involvement of engineers in other engineering science disciplines such as electrical, mechanical, civil, etc.
  • Performing scheduling and layout of operations and inspection and surveillance of materials, methods, and equipment used in construction.
  • Developing technical data regarding materials, sizes, qualities, dimensions, quantities, and costs to be incorporated into formal specifications.
  • Providing guidance, development and coordination for the planning, engineering design, and oversight of maintenance projects.
